1. Conceptual design of hydraulic systems for automotive engine applications : simulation, optimisation and testing
Abstract : The main contribution of this thesis lies in the area of systems design, and especially of such systems that involve several engineering domains, so-called multidomain or heterogeneous systems. The design of these systems is concerned with a need for efficient tools, especially in the early conceptual phase of the development process. READ MORE

2. On Alternative Fuels for Internal Combustion Engines : A study of biodiesel, gaseous methane and methanol
Abstract : This thesis covers some of the environmental impacts of internalcombustion engines running on alternative fuels. The focus of thestudies conveyed is the reduction of greenhouse gases and particleemissions, as these two factors are of great importance for the pathsthat road transportation is facing. READ MORE

3. A multi-objective evolutionary approach to simulation-based optimisation of real-world problems
Abstract : This thesis presents a novel evolutionary optimisation algorithm that can improve the quality of solutions in simulation-based optimisation.Simulation-based optimisation is the process of finding optimal parameter settings without explicitly examining each possible configuration of settings. 4. Multi-Disciplinary Conceptual Design of Future Jet Engine Systems
Abstract : This thesis describes various aspects of the development of a multi-disciplinary aero engine conceptual design tool, TERA2020 (Techno-economic, Environmental and Risk Assessment for 2020), based on an explicit algorithm that considers: engine performance, engine aerodynamic and mechanical design, aircraft design and performance, emissions prediction and environmental impact, engine and airframe noise, and production, maintenance and direct operating costs. As part of this research effort, a newly-derived semi-empirical NOx correlation for modern rich-burn single-annular combustors is proposed. 5. Studies of a Heavy-Duty Diesel Aftertreatment System Based on the NOX Storage and Reduction Technology
Abstract : The legislative limits for NOX emissions in the exhaust gas from heavy-duty diesel engines will be decreased in the European Union from today 3.5 g/kWh (Euro IV) to 2.0 g/kWh in 2008 (Euro V). In the USA and Japan a similar trend can be seen. READ MORE
