1. Dynamics of Exhaust Valve Flows and Confined Bluff Body Vortex Shedding
Abstract : This thesis can be divided into two interconnected topics; engine exhaust-valve flows and confined bluff-body vortex shedding. When optimising engine flow systems it is common to use low order simulation tools that require empirical inputs, for instance with respect to flow losses across the exhaust valves. READ MORE

2. Development of methods and strategies for optimisation of x-ray examinations
Abstract : The overall aim of the work presented in this thesis was to develop methods and strategies for the optimisation process prescribed by legal authorities for medical X-ray imaging. This overall aim was divided into four detailed aims: 1) to analyse and describe the conditions for the optimisation of a given projectional X-ray examination in a digital environment, 2) to develop an overall strategy for the optimisation work in a radiology department, 3) to develop and implement a suitable method for statistical analysis of visual grading characteristics (VGC) data, and, 4) to evaluate the characteristics of the new statistical method by comparison with receiver operating characteristics (ROC) statistical methodology and by simulations. 3. Felling Forests from Afar: Quantifying Deforestation Driven by Agricultural Expansion and International Trade
Abstract : Deforestation is a major source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and the largest threat to terrestrial biodiversity. Most forest loss is due to the expansion of agricultural land use increasingly driven by international demand for food, fuel and fibre. READ MORE

4. Equine seminal plasma: its role in protecting stallion spermatozoa during cryopreservation
Abstract : There is considerable variability in the ability of spermatozoa from different stallions to withstand the freezing process. As a result, stallions are usually categorized as good or bad freezers. READ MORE

5. SiC CMOS and memory devices for high-temperature integrated circuits
Abstract : High-temperature electronics find use in extreme environments, like data logging in downhole drilling for geothermal energy production, inside of high-temperature turbines, industrial gas sensors and space electronics. The simplest systems use a sensor and a transmitter, but more advance electronic systems would additionally require a microcontroller with memory. READ MORE
