26. Laser diode systems for photodynamic therapy and medical diagnostics
Abstract : This work concerns techniques for improvement of the coherence properties of diode lasers so that they may be used in two specific medical applications: (Interstitial) photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser-induced fluorescence diagnostics. In the first application, spatial coherence is crucial, since the treatment light should be delivered through relatively thin optical fibers to optimize treatment and to facilitate minimally invasive treatment. 27. Classical cadherins and the thyroid. Studies on organ development and epithelial differentiation
Abstract : The cadherins are key regulators of tissue patterning and organ formation. E-cadherin is important for cell-cell adhesion and promotes epithelial morphogenesis and maintenance of the epithelial phenotype. READ MORE

28. Getting in and out of shape : relevance for organ formation and cancer
Abstract : A central question during development is how single cells form functional multi-cellular organ structures. The high reproducibility indicates intricate synchronization of cellular behaviors such as migration, proliferation and cell shape changes. READ MORE

29. The dynamics of intra- and inter-organ communication during an acute kidney infection
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the roles of neuro-immune communication and infection-mediated coagulation during bacterial kidney infections. We demonstrate dynamic intra- and inter-organ host responses, where the outcome of an infection depends on both bacterial and host factors. READ MORE

30. Organs-on-chips for the pharmaceutical development process : design perspectives and implementations
Abstract : Organs-on-chips are dynamic cell culture devices created with the intention to mimic organ function in vitro. Their purpose is to assess the toxicity and efficacy of drugs and, as early as possible in the pharmaceutical development process, predict the outcome of clinical trials. READ MORE
