  1. 1. On the use of radiography and radiation dose consideration in orthodontic treatment

    Author : Christina Stervik; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; effective dose; errors; estimated risk; intra-oral radiograph; organ dose; orthodontic treatment; orthodontists; panoramic image; questionnaires; radiation doses;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to analyse the use of radiography and radiation risk associated with orthodontic treatment. Study I measured absorbed doses to radiosensitive organs in the head and neck in an anthropomorphic phantom head using thermo¬luminescent dosimeters (TLDs) from digital intra-oral and panoramic radiography. 2. 2. Probabilistic treatment planning based on dose coverage : How to quantify and minimize the effects of geometric uncertainties in radiotherapy

    Author : David Tilly; Anders Ahnesjö; Erik Grusell; Uwe Oelfke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Radiotherapy; treatment simulation; probabilistic planning; dose calculation; probabilistic optimization; statistical shape model; Medicinsk radiofysik; Medical Radiophysics;

    Abstract : Traditionally, uncertainties are handled by expanding the irradiated volume to ensure target dose coverage to a certain probability. The uncertainties arise from e.g. the uncertainty in positioning of the patient at every fraction, organ motion and in defining the region of interests on the acquired images. READ MORE

  3. 3. Applications of organ culture of the mouse inner ear

    Author : Diana Berggren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; organ culture; embryonic inner ear; intercellular junctions; aminoglycosides; statoacoustic ganglion; intermediate filaments; collagen; endolymph;

    Abstract : The embryonic mouse inner ear was used as a model with which to study ototoxicity and tissue interactions. The inner ear anlage can be explanted and cultured in vitro from about the 12th gestational day (gd), and will differentiate parallel with the inner ear developing in vivo until a time corresponding to birth (21st gd). 4. 4. Mathematical Modelling of Dose Planning in High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy

    Author : Björn Morén; Torbjörn Larsson; Åsa Carlsson Tedgren; Sebastiaan Breedveld; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Cancer is a widespread type of diseases that each year affects millions of people. It is mainly treated by chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy, or a combination of them. One modality of radiation therapy is high dose-rate brachytherapy, used in treatment of for example prostate cancer and gynecologic cancer. READ MORE

  5. 5. Improved dose response modeling for normal tissue damage and therapy optimization

    Author : Magdalena Adamus-Górka; Bengt K. Lind; Anders Brahme; Panayiotis Mavroidis; Randall K. Ten Haken; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Normal tissue complications; radiobiological models; dose-response; volume effect; spinal cord; effective FSU size; medicinsk strålningsfysik; Medical Radiation Physics;

    Abstract : The present thesis is focused on the development and application of dose response models for radiation therapy. Radiobiological models of tissue response to radiation are an integral part of the radiotherapeutic process and a powerful tool to optimize tumor control and minimize damage to healthy tissues for use in clinical trials.
