  1. 1. Neutrophil extracellular traps as potential therapeutic targets to prevent tumor-induced organ failure and metastasis

    Author : Melanie Herre; Anna-Karin Olsson; Jessica Cedervall; Peetra Magnusson; Benoit Ho-Tin-Noé; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neutrophil extracellular traps; NETs; cancer; metastasis; inflammation; organ dysfunction; thrombosis; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Cancer does not only affect surrounding tissues, but also leads to complications at distant sites. The reason for this is that tumors secrete factors and prime cells that travel through the body, making cancer a systemic disease. In fact, cancer death is mostly caused by systemic complications such as metastasis, organ failure or thrombosis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Function of contractile and cytoskeletal proteins in smooth muscle: Effects of hypertrophy and age and desmin removal in a transgenic animal

    Author : Rolf Sjuve; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transgenic mouse; desmin; embryonic myosin; isoforms; myosin heavy chain; age; smooth muscle; hypertrophy; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : In man, the urinary bladder responds to an urinary outflow obstruction with a pronounced dilatation and growth of the bladder wall. This clinical situation can be mimicked in rat by creation of a partial urinary outflow obstruction and the papers included in the present thesis use this animal model to address questions regarding the adaptive changes in the smooth muscle of the growing bladder. 3. 3. Pharmacokinetics of mercury from dental amalgam

    Author : Gunilla Sandborgh Englund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Human; dental amalgam; mercury; blood; plasma; urine; saliva; feces; pharmacokinetics; kidney; chelating agents.;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the present work has been to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on mercury from dental amalgam in humans. The influence of amalgam removal on mercury levels in blood, plasma and urine has been studied in twelve volunteers. All amalgam fillings were removed during one dental session. READ MORE

  4. 4. Living donor transplantation -outcome and risk

    Author : Niclas Kvarnström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; living donor; kidney; uterus; transplantation;

    Abstract : Live organ donors undergo extensive surgery to provide an organ that can be lifesaving or improve the health and quality of life for the recipient. The thesis seeks important knowledge that may be used to further reduce the donor risk for the live kidney donor as well as for an entirely new group of living donors, the uterus donor. READ MORE

  5. 5. Pulmonary Injury Following Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

    Author : Anna Börjesson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reperfusion injury; intestinal ischemia; pulmonary injury; endothelium; cytokines; alveolar fluid clearance; leukocytes; orthopaedics; Surgery; traumatology; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is a potentially life-threatening condition, sometimes leading to a systemic inflammatory response and the potential development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of intestinal I/R on pulmonary function with special emphasis on removal of excess alveolar fluid, pulmonary endothelial barrier permeability, leukocyte accumulation and function, and possible therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of pulmonary injury following intestinal I/R.
