1. Organic Azides : Functional Molecules and Materials
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis stems from the chemistry of the azido group, and more specifically from the unique reactivity of perfluorinated aromatic azides and how to use this reactivity to access new types of molecules to enable new applications in asymmetric synthesis and materials. In the first section of this thesis, a photoactivatable fluorescence probe is presented, where the non-luminescent azide was activated via a UV-light-promoted intramolecular N–H insertion reaction forming a fluorescence emitter. 2. Imagining the Organic City : Modern Tropes of Organization
Abstract : The thesis examines three ’organic tropes’ of modern architecture and urban design, addressing different crucial moments of change within modernist discourse. Attention is focused on the institutionalization of ‘town planning’ at the turn of the last century; the shift during the post-war years; and the beginning of urban debate in Japan during the early 1960s. 3. The Synthesis of Molecular Switches Based Upon Ru(II) Polypyridyl Architecture for Electronic Applications
Abstract : According to the famous axiom known as Moore’s Law the number of transistors that can be etched on a given piece of silicon, and therefore the computing power, will double every 18 to 24 months. For the last 40 years Moore’s prediction has held true as computers have grown more and more powerful. READ MORE

4. Mesostructured materials : Synthesis towards applications
Abstract : A new class of materials with well-defined structures on mesoscopic (2-50 nm) length scales has attracted considerable interest during the last decade. These mesostructured mataterials are formed from the self-assembly of amphiphillic molecules and inorganic precursors. READ MORE

5. Synthesis and investigation of bacterial effector molecules
Abstract : During infections, bacterial microorganisms initiate profound interactions with mammalian host cells. Usually defense mechanisms of the host destroy intruding bacteria in rapid manner. However, many bacterial pathogens have evolved in a way to avoid these mechanisms. READ MORE
