  1. 1. Properties of the endothelial cells and the glomerular barrier

    Author : Jenny Sörensson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Capillary permeability; kidney glomerulus physiology; isolated perfused kidney; endothelium; orosomucoid; charge; horseradish peroxidase; inflammation; proteoglycan; cAMP.;

    Abstract : The kidneys are vital organs that filter plasma to produce 180 liters of primary urine per day. Only 1% of this volume is excreted and the rest is reabsorbed. Naturally, such huge amounts of fluid must be well controlled to maintain the homeostasis, which is a prerequisite for life. READ MORE

  2. 2. Physiological and morphological aspects of the glomerular barrier in health and disease. Results based on experimental studies in the rat

    Author : Clara Hjalmarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : glomerular permeability; isolated perfused kidney; charge; endothelial surface layer; glycocalyx; electron microscopy; orosomucoid; nephrotic syndrome; proteinuria;

    Abstract : Tremendous amounts of fluid are filtered every day through the kidneys. The anastomosing capillary loops surrounded by Bowman s capsule, forming the glomerulus, function in accordance with the interplay between the hydrostatic and the colloid osmotic pressure. The result of the action of these mechanisms is the production of primary urine. READ MORE

  3. 3. C-reactive protein in clinical practice with special regard to infectious diseases

    Author : Lars-Olof Hansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : CRP; general practice; septi-caemia; endocarditis; influenza; bacterialmeningitis; viral meningitis; community-acquired pneumonia; malignant melanoma; albumin; transferrin; a-1 anti-trypsin; hapto-globin; orosomucoid; transthyretin; iron.;

    Abstract : A new simple affinity purification method for human CRP using Arginine-Sepharose 4B was developed with a recovery of >90 % and containing < 5-10 % contaminating proteins. In a multicenter study including 607 consecutive patients in general practice, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and serum CRP were compared. READ MORE

  4. 4. Recurrent Streptococcal Pharyngotonsillitis Studies on etiology and treatment

    Author : Arne Orrling; Lund näs- och halssjukdomar Öron-; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; auditive system and speech; Otorinolaryngologi; Infektioner; Otorhinolaryngology; Infections; Clindamycin.; Penicillin tolerance; Tonsillar surface fluid; treatment failure; Group A streptococci; hörsel- och talorganen; audiologi; audiology; Recurrent streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis;

    Abstract : In acute pharyngotonsillitis group A streptococci (GAS) is the etiological agent in 30-50% of cases. Phenoxymethylpenicillin (pcV) is the drug of choice in Sweden. However, the failure rate is as high as 5-25% and further pcV treatment is followed by still higher failure rates. The background of failures remains largely elusive. READ MORE

  5. 5. Endogenous proteins as markers of glomerular function and dysfunction

    Author : Jan Tencer; Njurmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glomerular filter; amyloidosis; glomerulonephritis; glomerular disease; proteins; proteinuria; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : Plasma and urine concentrations of endogenous proteins are frequently used in the diagnosis of kidney diseases and in studies of glomerular filter function. The main issues addressed in these studies were: storage of urine samples for subsequent protein analysis, use of protein concentrations in urine and in plasma in health and as markers of glomerular diseases, and the application of renal plasma-to-urine clearance of endogenous proteins in estimating the size-selectivity properties of the glomerular capillary wall.
