  1. 1. The roles of osteoclasts and RUNX2 in the progression of prostate cancer bone metastases

    Author : Junchi Huang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Castration-resistant prostate cancer; Bone metastases; RUNX2; Osteoclasts;

    Abstract : Metastasis to the skeleton is the major cause of death from prostate cancer (PC). Patients with metastatic PC are treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to decrease testosterone levels and thereby inhibit further growth of the tumor. READ MORE

  2. 2. Evaluation of Functionalized Biopolymers as a Step Toward Targeted Therapy of Osteoporosis

    Author : Sujit Kootala; Jöns Hilborn; Peter Thomsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Osteoporosis; Bone regeneration; Biomaterials; Hyaluronic acid; Bisphosphonates; Osteoclasts; Osteoblasts; Growth factors; Kemi med inriktning mot polymerkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Polymer Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot materialkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Materials Chemistry;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis focuses on the development of strategies and smart bioactive materials for the treatment of osteoporosis. High and low molecular weight soluble hyaluronic acid-bisphosphonate (HA-BP) derivatives were investigated for their ability to inhibit osteoclasts. READ MORE

  3. 3. Bisphosphonates for orthopedic applications. Studies in rat models

    Author : Jörgen Åstrand; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; topical treatment; osteonecrosis; bone graft resorption; prosthetic loosening; Bisphosphonates; osteoclasts;

    Abstract : Prosthetic loosening, bone graft resorption and osteonecrosis are examples of problems in orthopedic surgery caused by or augmented by bone resorption. Bone resorption is caused by osteoclasts. Osteoclasts can be inactivated with biphosphonates, a drug in clinical use against osteoporosis and osteolytic tumors. READ MORE

  4. 4. Targeting the hematopoietic stem cell to correct osteopetrosis

    Author : Carmen Flores Bjurström; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematopoietic stem cells; bone marrow transplantation; gene therapy; osteoclasts; infantile malignant osteopetrosis;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on developing stem cell targeted gene therapy for the severe hereditary disorder Infantile Malignant Osteopetrosis (IMO) as well as increasing the understanding of how the genetic defect present in IMO affects the hematopoietic stem cells and hematopoiesis in general. IMO is a rare congenital disorder associated with an increased number of non-functional osteoclasts and the absence of bone resorption results in accumulation of sclerotic bone leading to abnormal bone marrow cavity formation insufficient to support hematopoiesis. 5. 5. Vitamin A and Bone: Studies in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Vikte Lionikaite; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vitamin A; retinol; osteoclasts; osteoblasts; cortical bone; osteoporosis;

    Abstract : Background: Excess vitamin A is associated with decreased cortical bone and increased risk of fractures in humans. The aim of the present thesis was to assess the importance of vitamin A on the skeleton and bone cells in in vivo animal studies and mechanistic in vitro experiments. READ MORE
