  1. 11. Chemokines and bone : lessons from in vitro and in vivo studies

    Author : Sara Rosendahl; Pernilla Lundberg; Cecilia Koskinen Holm; Elin Kindstedt; Marie Lagerquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bone homeostasis is maintained by the balanced activity of bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Inflammation in the vicinity of bone disturbs the balanced bone remodeling process, which often results in bone loss. READ MORE

  2. 12. Development of Novel Therapies, Models, and Biomarkers for Osteoclast-Related Diseases

    Author : Henrik Löfvall; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Osteopetros; Biomarkör; Cellodling; Extracellulär matrix ECM ; Osteoklast; Osteoclast; Biomarker; Cell culture; Osteopetrosis; Gene Therapy; Extracellular matrix ECM ;

    Abstract : Osteoclasts are derived from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and form upon stimulation of osteoclast precursors by macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and receptor activator of nuclear factor κΒ ligand (RANKL). Osteoclasts resorb bone by secreting hydrochloric acid, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and cathepsin K. READ MORE

  3. 13. Biogenesis of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoforms 5a and 5b in cell and animal models

    Author : Serhan Zenger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is an iron-containing binuclear acid metallohydrolase that belongs to the purple acid phosphatase (PAP) family. It is a glycoprotein translated as a monomeric protein but is commonly isolated from tissues as a proteolytically processed dimeric form with increased enzyme activity. READ MORE

  4. 14. CD47–SIRPα : an interaction of importance for bone cell differentiation

    Author : Cecilia Koskinen; Pernilla Lundberg; Per-Arne Oldenborg; Riku Kiviranta; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CD47; SIRPalpha; osteoblast; osteoclast; SHP-2; Akt2; cell research; cellforskning;

    Abstract : Bone tissue is continuously remodeled by bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts, in processes tightly regulated by hormones, cytokines and growth factors. CD47, a ubiquitously expressed protein, and one of its ligands, signal-regulatory protein alpha (SIRPα), are two cell-surface proteins belonging to the immunoglobulin (Ig)-superfamily. READ MORE

  5. 15. Functional aspects of prothrombin in bone

    Author : Erik Karlström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Prothrombin (PT) is the inactive zymogen to the serine protease alpha-thrombin which in the coagulation cascade is responsible for clot formation through converting fibrinogen to fibrin. PT has been shown to be present in calcified bone matrix, and alpha-thrombin has been implicated in various bone resorbing disorders of inflammatory origin, such as rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis.
