  1. 1. Defining the clinical usefulness of vertebral fracture assessment

    Author : Lisa Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vertebral fracture; vertebral fracture assessment; osteoporosis; DXA; HRpQCT; bone microindentation; mild vertebral fracture; physical function; fracture risk; incident fracture; older women;

    Abstract : Objective: Vertebral fractures (VFs) are the most common osteoporotic fracture and among the strongest predictors for future fracture. VFs can be identified by vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) from lateral spine imaging (LSI) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). READ MORE

  2. 2. Aspects of fracture prevention - The role of fracture liaison services and alendronate

    Author : Kristian F Axelsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Osteoporosis; Prevention; Fracture; Fracture liaison service; Alendronate; Elderly; Prednisolone;

    Abstract : Objective: In an ageing population, osteoporotic fractures become more common and cause increased morbidity, mortality and societal cost. This thesis aimed to determine the potential role of fracture liaison services (FLS) and alendronate treatment on fracture risk in those with a recent fracture, in the elderly and in those treated with oral prednisolone. 3. 3. Osteoporosis in SLE

    Author : Katarina Almehed; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : osteoporosis; systemic lupus erythematosus; bone mineral density; health-related quality of life; SF-36; resistin; cross sectional study; vertebral fracture;

    Abstract : As the treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) has become more effective the focus has partly shifted from main concern of short term morbidity and survival to long term complications such as osteoporosis. The aims of this thesis were to a) determine prevalence and risk factors of osteoporosis and of b) vertebral fractures c) evaluate if adequate osteoporotic treatment was provided d) determine if resistin, an adipokine with proposed pro-inflammatory properties, was associated with markers of inflammation or bone mineral density (BMD) and to e) investigate patients self reported health related quality of life (HRQOL) and its relationship to disease variables and employment status in female SLE patients. 4. 4. Aspects of bone quality and risk assessments in fracture and elective orthopaedic patients

    Author : Camilla Bergh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fracture; Fracture incidence; Epidemiology; Mortality; Osteoporosis; Frailty; Spinal stenosis; Bone quality; Bone mineral density;

    Abstract : Background: Bone quality, bone strength, and bone remodelling are important in many orthopaedic conditions and can have an impact on fracture incidence, bone healing, implant failure, and different outcome aspects. There is relatively sparse information on fracture incidence and mortality both for all fractures compiled and for some of the individual fracture locations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Diseases in the hip - Exploring risk for fracture and osteoarhritis

    Author : Cecilie Hongslo Vala; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hip fracture; Femoral neck fracture; Trochanteric fracture; Osteoporosis; Osteoarthritis; Total hip replacement; Total knee replacement; Farmers; Homogamy; Assortative mating; Bereavement;

    Abstract : Objective: Hip fracture is the most serious condition linked to low bone mass or osteoporosis, and Sweden has one of the highest incidences in the world. The proportion of elderly is increasing in the Swedish population and in the world, and with increased age comes increased incidence for both fragility fracture and osteoarthritis. READ MORE
