  1. 21. The faecal flora : a source of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance

    Author : Annika Samuelsson; Håkan Hanberger; Barbro Isaksson; Jon Jonasson; Bo Söderquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are important causes of mortality and morbidity, and antibiotic treatment is often necessary. Development and availability of new antibiotics are closely followed by development of resistance among microorganisms. During antibiotic therapy, a fraction of the antibiotic given is found in the gut. READ MORE

  2. 22. Spatial and temporal dynamics of subarctic birch forest carbon exchange

    Author : Michal Heliasz; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mountain birch; eddy covariance; carbon budget; insect outbreak; forest expansion; temporal variability; spatial variability;

    Abstract : High northern latitudes are of special importance for the global carbon budget as they store large amounts of organic matter in the soil and are expected to be the most strongly affected by climate change. Here we investigate carbon exchange in the subarctic mountain birch forest growing on the limit where tree growth is possible. READ MORE

  3. 23. Assessing the health consequences of deficiencies in water distribution networks: a basis for future network management

    Author : Victor Vinas; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; QMRA; risk management; distribution network; microbial risk; epidemiological studies;

    Abstract : Drinking water distribution networks are susceptible to incidents that may contaminate the drinking water being served to the population. Five major risks that can impact negatively the health of consumers have been identified by a literature study: intrusion, cross-connections and backflows, unhygienic repairs or maintenance works, inadequate management of storage reservoirs and biofilms. 4. 24. Francisella tularensis: persistence, dissemination and source attribution : a theoretical and computational approach

    Author : Chinmay Kumar Dwibedi; Anders Johansson; Pär Larsson; Markus Antwerpen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella; genomics; evolution; microbial forensics; dispersal; persistence; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The bacterium Francisella tularensis causing tularemia in humans and other mammals displays little genetic diversity among genomes across temporal and spatial scales. F. tularensis infects humans with an extremely low infectious dose and causes natural seasonal tularemia outbreaks. READ MORE

  5. 25. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, EHEC.Microbiological diagnosis, characterisation and clinical bacteriological aspects

    Author : Christina Welinder-Olsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Escherichia coli; EHEC; VTEC; verocytotoxin; PFGE; EHEC-hemolysin; aerobactin; diarrhoea; HUS;

    Abstract : Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) constitutes a group of E. coli that in the past two decades has been the cause of several outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease. The microorganism causes hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in 5-10% of the patients, 30% of the HUS patients develop remaining kidney injuries. READ MORE
