  1. 1. Differentiation of Brain and Reproductive Organs in Birds : Effects of Environmental Contaminants

    Author : Jeanette Axelsson; Björn Brunström; Björn Munro-Jenssen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zoophysiology; Bird; endocrine disruption; estrogen receptor; methoxychlor; UV-filter; sexual behavior; ovotestis; Zoofysiologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The first objective of this thesis was to investigate effects of endocrine disruptors on the developing brain and gonads of bird embryos. The substances studied were the insecticide methoxychlor, and nine UV-filters (3-benzylidene camphor (3BC), 4 methyl benzylidene camphor (4MBC), benzophenone (BP) 1,2 and 3, 4 hydroxy benzophenone (4 HB), 4 dihydroxy benzophenone (4DHB), benzyl salicylate (BS), and ethyl-4-aminobenzoate Et-PABA)), commonly used in cosmetic products. 2. 2. Environmental pollutants and the reproductive system in birds : Developmental effects of estrogenic compounds

    Author : Cecilia Berg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Avian embryo; test system; xeno-estrogen; endocrine disruption; reproductive organ differentiation; oviduct; testis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecotoxicology; ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : A number of environmental pollutants have been shown to mimick the action of the female sex hormone estrogen and are, therefore, suspected to be responsible for reproductive abnormalities seen in wildlife. Test systems which can be used in hazard and risk assessment of chemicals with estrogenic effects are consequently needed. READ MORE

  3. 3. Roles of ERα and ERβ in Normal and Disrupted Sex Differentiation in Japanese Quail

    Author : Anna Mattsson; Björn Brunström; Krister Halldin; Lena Sahlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Toxicology; sex differentiation; estrogen receptor; sexual behavior; endocrine disruption; Japanese quail; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Exposure to xenoestrogens during development has been shown to impair sexual differentiation in various species. The major aim of this thesis was to elucidate the respective roles of the two estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ in normal and disrupted differentiation of sex organs and copulatory behavior in the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). 4. 4. Endocrine disruption in fish : Effects of 17α-ethinylestradiol exposure on non-reproductive behavior, fertility and brain and testis transcriptome

    Author : Tove Porseryd; Inger Porsch Hällström; Ioanna Katsiadaki; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 17α-ethinylestradiol; endocrine disrupting chemical; fish; behavior; fertility; transcriptome; RNA sequencing; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Abstract : Aquatic environments are the end recipient for most anthropogenic chemical pollutants. One common chemical pollutant found in the aquatic environment is 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic estrogen used in contraceptive pills. READ MORE

  5. 5. Developmental exposure to mixtures of environmental pollutants : Studies on metabolism, developmental processes, and reproductive organs in zebrafish and chicken embryos

    Author : Anna Mentor; Maria Jönsson; Patrick Babin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mixtures; Developmental toxicology; Endocrine disrupting chemicals; Metabolism; Feminization; Zebrafish; Chicken embryo; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Abstract : Humans and wildlife are continuously exposed to mixtures of environmental pollutants. Mixture toxicity can be challenging to predict due to interactions between chemicals and thus whole-mixture approaches are crucial in toxicology. READ MORE
