6. Mineral fibers, cigarette smoke, and oxidative DNA damage : An experimental study
Abstract : This study concerns the ability of mineral fibers and cigarette smoke to generate reactive oxygen metabolites and to cause damage to DNA. The generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH") was demonstrated by using the DNA base, deoxyguanosine (dG) as a trapping agent for OH" and determining its hydroxylation to 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (80HdG), and oxidative DNA damage was assessed as formation of 80HdG in isolated DNA or in DNA of human lung cells in culture. 7. Role of oxidative stress response in radiosensitivity
Abstract : The quality of the ionizing radiation (IR) can be described in terms of its nature, photons or particles, and their corresponding energies. The energy is classified in terms of High or Low linear energy transfer that will produce a different distribution of DNA damage and other molecules in the cell either by direct action or indirect action. 8. Cellular responses to combined irradiation with alpha particles and X-rays
Abstract : Mixed radiation fields, where different ionizing particles act together, are very important in radiobiology and in radiation protection. Mixed beams are not only the most common form of radiation exposure, but the prediction of their biological effect is also full of uncertainties. READ MORE

9. Short and long-term effects of exposure to low dose and low dose rate of gamma radiation : using in vitro and in vivo models
Abstract : Assessment of human health risks from exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is mainly based on the extrapolation of results from epidemiological studies on populations exposed to relatively high doses and often at high dose rates (HDR). Risk estimates after exposure to low doses and in particular at low dose rates (LDR) remain controversial due to a lack of epidemiological evidence. READ MORE

10. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : DNA damage and cell signaling
Abstract : Oxidative stress is a threat to our wellbeing. The formation of reactive oxygen species may result in oxidative lesions in DNA and RNA. When challenging A549 cells with 18O-labeled hydrogen peroxide, we found that RNA was between 14-25 times more sensitive to [18O]-8-oxoGuo formation than [18O]-8-oxodGuo formation in DNA. READ MORE
