  1. 1. Renal Dysfunction and Cardiovascular Disease

    Author : Inga Soveri; Bengt Fellström; Lars Lind; Ola Samuelsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Internal medicine; renal dysfunktion; cardiovascular disease; risk factor; mortality; endothelial dysfunction; arterial stiffness; oxidative stress; inflammation; renal transplantation; haemodialysis; general population; Invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Kidney dysfunction increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The mechanisms for the risk increase seem to involve a combination of traditional and non-traditional CVD risk factors.We studied renal dysfunction as CVD and mortality risk factor in middle-aged men free from diabetes and CVD. 2. 2. Oxygen Metabolism in Experimental Kidney Disease

    Author : Ebba Sivertsson; Fredrik Palm; Peter Hansell; Jenny Nyström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; kidney oxygenation; mitochondria; proteinuria; uncoupling protein; adenosine nucleotide transporter; diabetes; hyperthyroidism; thyroid hormone; hypertension; angiotensin II; CDK; AST-120; rats; mice; Fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Tubulointerstitial hypoxia has been proposed a unifying mechanism behind the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), regardless of primary diagnosis. Important factors that contribute to the development of hypoxia are reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), oxidative stress and mitochondria uncoupling. READ MORE

  3. 3. Expression of inflammatory and insulin signaling genes in acute and chronic stress

    Author : Anna Witasp; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The acute surgical stress response induces a short-term inflammatory and insulin resistant condition, commonly producing hyperglycemia, which is strongly associated to morbidity and mortality in postsurgical patients. The chronic state of renal insufficiency, on the other hand, represents a long-term stress associated with alarmingly high mortality rates, primarily due to cardiovascular complications, and is similarly related to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. 4. 4. Toxicity and biocompatibility of nanoparticles, and studies on oxidative stress and DNA damage

    Author : Ylva Rodhe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Oxidative stress is associated with several diseases, either as a cause or a consequence. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one example of a disease in which elevated levels of oxidative stress are frequently reported. READ MORE

  5. 5. Assessment of DNA damage, oxidative stress and inflammation in chronic kidney disease patients : and a clinical study of a dietary supplement

    Author : Ylva Rodhe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Decreased kidney function is associated with higher levels of oxidative stress, inflammation and malnutrition. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have a higher risk to develop cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis and cancer compared to the general population. Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in CKD patients. READ MORE
