  1. 1. Effect of Dietary Antioxidants on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Metabolic Factors : Studies in Subjects with Overweight and with Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Elisabet Rytter; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Anders Sjödin; Helmut Sies; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Antioxidants; supplementation; fruit and vegetables; oxidative stress; isoprostanes; lipid peroxidation; oxidative damage to DNA; glycaemic control; inflammation; overweight; type 2 diabetes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Abstract : Observational studies have indicated that fruit and vegetables, and dietary antioxidants may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, potentially by affecting pathogenic mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical trials investigating the effects of supplementation with single or a few antioxidants in high doses have, however, shown inconsistent results and thus have not been able to support the observational findings. Abstract : Dietary fat quality influences the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A low-grade inflammation is suggested to contribute to the disease development, often accompanied by obesity. Whereas n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have been considered anti-inflammatory, n-6 PUFA have been proposed to act pro-inflammatory. READ MORE

  3. 3. Prostaglandins and Isoprostanes in Relation to Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis : Role of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Johanna Helmersson; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Tommy Cederholm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; prostaglandin F2α; F2-isoprostane; interleukin-6; C-reactive protein; serum amyloid A; tocopherols; cardiovascular risk factors; variation; inflammation; oxidative stress; human; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden;

    Abstract : Inflammation and oxidative stress may be involved in atherogenesis. This thesis describes clinical studies of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), an inflammatory mediator, and the isoprostane 8-iso-PGF2α, a reliable indicator of oxidative stress, and cytokine-related inflammatory mediators and indicators in healthy subjects and in a population-based cohort of Swedish men. 4. 4. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation

    Author : Ulf Risérus; Keith Frayn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Metabolic syndrome; dietary fatty acids; conjugated linoleic acid; insulin resistance; oxidative stress; inflammation; cardiovascular disease; dyslipidemia; abdominal obesity; type 2 diabetes; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Nutrition; näringslära;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. READ MORE

  5. 5. Oxidative Stress, Angiogenesis and Inflammation in Normal Pregnancy and Postpartum

    Author : Maria Palm; Ove Axelsson; Samar Basu; Charlotta Grunewald; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Angiogenesis; inflammation; IL-6; F2-isoprostanes; oxidative stress; Pentraxin 3; PGF2α; PlGF; pregnancy; sFlt1; TNF-α; VEGF-A; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The aims were to investigate oxidative stress (I), angiogenesis (II) and inflammation (III-IV) in healthy women during pregnancy and postpartum. Oxidative stress was estimated by measurement of 8-iso-PGF2α and the antioxidants α- and γ-tocopherol. READ MORE
