11. Exhaled markers of oxidative stress in the airways
Abstract : Breath contains a number of different molecules, some of which may have potential use as markers for oxidative stress in the airways during chronic airway inflammation. The major objectives were to develop and validate methods for quantifying five potential exhaled markers of oxidative stress: malondialdehyde (MDA) and free 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and ethane, pentane and isoprene in exhaled air, and to test the applicability of the methods. 12. Biotic and abiotic stress in microorganisms and plants: Some Mechanisms of Stress and Programmed Cell Death. Genetic Engineering Approaches Towards Improved Stress Tolerance
Abstract : Various forms of stress, such as biotic and abiotic stress, were studied in microorganisms and plants to learn more about the underlying mechanisms of such stress and potential genetic engineering strategies towards stress tolerance. An antifreeze protein from winter flounder, expressed in E. READ MORE

13. Oxidative stress and alterations in the mammalian iron metabolism : A study on iron, inflammation, oxidative stress and neurodegeneration
Abstract : Iron is essential for all living organisms, from bacteria to man for a broad variety of biological functions, including oxygen transport and DNA synthesis. However, iron can also be toxic, due to its involvement in the formation of highly reactive oxygen species through Fenton chemistry. READ MORE

14. Insulin-Producing Cells, Iron, Oxidative Stress, and Lysosomal Pathology
Abstract : Accumulating evidence suggests that injnries caused by oxygen-derived radicals contribute to the destruction of pancreatic islet ß-cells in autoinnnune diabetes mellitus (diabetes type I, or IDDM). Oxidative stress may be caused by an enhanced production of oxygen-derived radicals, or by a decreased scavenging of such molecules. READ MORE

15. Determination of biomarkers for lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress : Development of analytical techniques and methods
Abstract : Oxidative stress can be defined as a state of disturbance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in favour of the former, leading to potential damage. Processes associated with oxidative stress involve reactive oxygen species and radicals and can result in elevated levels of oxidatively modified or toxic molecules that can cause cellular malfunction, and even cell death.
