  2. 2. The oxidative stress response of Francisella tularensis

    Author : Marie Honn; Anders Sjöstedt; Helena Lindgren; Andres Melendez; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella tularensis; FupA; MglA; OxyR; ROS; oxidative stress; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Francisella tularensis is capable of infecting numerous cell types, including professional phagocytes. Upon phagocytosis, F. tularensis resides within the phagosome before escaping into the cytosol to replicate. Phagocytes constitute a hostile environment rich in ROS, which are employed as a means of killing pathogens. READ MORE

  3. 3. The oxidative metabolism by eosinophils : Effects of allergen exposure and interleukin-5

    Author : Charlotte Woschnagg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Eosinophils; allergy; asthma; rhinitis; oxidative metabolism; IL-5; priming; signal transduction; protein phosphorylation; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the oxidative metabolism by blood eosinophils from birch pollen allergic subjects was studied and compared to that by eosinophils from healthy controls, during and out of the pollen season. The effects and mechanisms of in vitro IL-5 priming on blood eosinophils were investigated and compared to the effects of in vivo priming during pollen exposure. READ MORE

  4. 4. Prostaglandins and Isoprostanes in Relation to Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis : Role of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Johanna Helmersson; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Tommy Cederholm; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Inflammation and oxidative stress may be involved in atherogenesis. This thesis describes clinical studies of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), an inflammatory mediator, and the isoprostane 8-iso-PGF2α, a reliable indicator of oxidative stress, and cytokine-related inflammatory mediators and indicators in healthy subjects and in a population-based cohort of Swedish men. 5. 5. Molecular mechanism(s) underlying neurodegeneration in SCA7 disease : Role of NOX enzymes and oxidative stress

    Author : Abiodun Ajayi; Anna-Lena Ström; Ana Cristina Rego; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; neurodegeneration; oxidative stress; NOX; metabolism; p53; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG trinucleotide expansion in the SCA7 gene resulting in progressive ataxia and retinal dystrophy. SCA7 belongs to a group of neurodegenerative disorders called polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, that share the common feature of glutamine tract expansions within otherwise unrelated proteins. READ MORE
