  1. 11. Silicic Magma Genesis in Basalt-dominated Oceanic Settings : Examples from Iceland and the Canary Islands

    Author : Sylvia E. Berg; Valentin Troll; Steffi Burchardt; Frances Deegan; Morten Riishuus; Nicholas Arndt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silicic magmatism; Iceland; magma-crust interaction; proto-continental crust; early Earth; zircon geochronology and geochemistry; oxygen isotopes; 2011-2012 El Hierro eruption; crustal xenoliths; 3D X-ray μ-CT; volatiles; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : The origin of silicic magma in basalt-dominated oceanic settings is fundamental to our understanding of magmatic processes and formation of the earliest continental crust. Particularly significant is magma-crust interaction that can modify the composition of magma and the dynamics of volcanism. READ MORE

  2. 12. Precambrian Crustal Evolution of the Rehoboth Province, Southern Africa

    Author : Valby van Schijndel; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Rehoboth Province; Rehoboth Basement Inlier; Kaaien Terrane; Dwyka Diamictite; U–Pb; Sm–Nd; Lu–Hf; Ar–Ar Geochronology; Oxygen isotopes; Zircon; Baddeleyite;

    Abstract : This thesis uses U-Pb, Sm-Nd Lu-Hf, Ar-Ar and Oxygen isotope data on well-documented rock samples, to investigate crustal evolution of the Precambrian Rehoboth Province of Southern Africa. This province is defined by its smooth magnetic character, reflecting deep magnetic basement in contrast to the adjoining mobile belts and the Kaapvaal Craton. READ MORE

  3. 13. Time-resolved Structural and Mechanistic Studies of Water Oxidation in Photosystem II : water here, water there, water everywhere

    Author : Casper de Lichtenberg; Johannes Messinger; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Holger Dau; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxygenic Photosynthesis; Photosystem II; TR-MIMS; isotope exchange; EPR; EDNMR; water splitting; water oxidation;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is undisputedly one of the most important chemical processes for human life on earth as it not only fills the atmosphere with the oxygen that we need to breathe, but also sustains the accumulation of biomass, which is not only used as nourishment but is also present in almost every aspect of our lives as building material, textiles in clothes and furniture, or even as living decorations to name a few.The photosynthetic water-splitting mechanism is catalyzed by a water:plastoquinone oxido-reductase by the name of photosystem II (PSII), which is embedded in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. 4. 14. Characterising volcanic magma plumbing systems : A tool to improve eruption forecasting at hazardous volcanoes

    Author : David A. Budd; Valentin Troll; Tod Waight; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magma plumbing; oxygen isotopes; thermobarometry; crustal assimilation; Katla; Merapi; Kelud; Toba; volcanic hazards; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : This thesis attempts to develop our understanding of volcanic magma plumbing systems and the magmatic processes that operate within them, such as fractional crystallisation, crustal partial melting, assimilation, and magma mixing. I utilise petrology, rock and mineral geochemistry, and isotope systematics to seek to improve our ability to forecast the eruptive frequency and style of active volcanoes, an aspect often lacking in current volcano monitoring efforts. 5. 15. Proton, Electron, and O2 transfer in Cytochrome c Oxidase

    Author : Lina Salomonsson; Peter Brzezinski; Marilyn Gunner; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytochrome c oxidase; electron transfer; proton transfer; proton pumping; kinetic isotope effect; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : In mitochondria and aerobic bacteria energy conservation involves electron transfer through the membrane-bound protein of the respiratory chain to oxygen. Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water. Part of the energy released in this reaction is used to pump protons across the membrane. READ MORE
