  1. 21. Character and Function of Anammox Bacteria under Environmental Stress

    Author : Ola Bäckman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Anammox; N-cycle; environmental stress; redox oscillations; anammoxosome; key proteins;

    Abstract : During the last few decades observations of novel processes involved in nitrogen transformations have fundamentally challenged the view of pathways and controlling mechanisms during local and global nitrogen cycling. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) constitutes one of these new pathways where autotrophic bacteria oxidize ammonium by nitrite to dinitrogen gas under anaerobic conditions. READ MORE

  2. 22. Determination of biomarkers for lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress : Development of analytical techniques and methods

    Author : Kristina Claeson Bohnstedt; Bo Karlberg; Niels Heegaard; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; capillary electrophoresis; mass spectrometry; electrospray; porous graphitic carbon; oxidative stress; lipid peroxidation; biomarker; malondialdehyde; hydroxynonenal; isoprostane; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : Oxidative stress can be defined as a state of disturbance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in favour of the former, leading to potential damage. Processes associated with oxidative stress involve reactive oxygen species and radicals and can result in elevated levels of oxidatively modified or toxic molecules that can cause cellular malfunction, and even cell death. 3. 23. Stress-induced cardiomyopathy - clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Jonatan Oras; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Stress-induced cardiomyopathy; Subarachnoid hemorrhage; tako-tsubo; isoflurane; outcome; cerebral infarction; hsTnT; NTproBNP; proteomics; bioinformatics;

    Abstract : Background: Stress-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) is an acute cardiac condition with akinesia in the left ventricle (LV) that can be severe. A stress-trigger, physical or emotional, is usually identified preceding onset of symptoms and catecholamine overstimulation is involved in the pathogenesis of SIC. READ MORE

  4. 24. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy

    Author : Malou Friederich Persson; Fredrik Palm; Richard K. Porter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; mitochondria; Uncoupling Protein-2; Adenosine Nucleotide Transporter; uncoupling; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; db db; dinitrophenol; Coenzyme Q10; oxygen; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. READ MORE

  5. 25. Vitreoscilla Haemoglobin. Genetic Fusions and Metabolic Characterisation

    Author : Viktoria Roos; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Metabolism; Biokemi; metabolism; osmotic stress; transcript profiling; DNA microarrays; random elongation mutagenesis; directed evolution; mRNA structure; Vitreoscilla haemoglobin VHb ; Escherichia coli; salt stress.;

    Abstract : Vitreoscilla is an obligate aerobic bacterium living in oxygen-poor environments such as stagnant ponds and decaying vegetable matter. Vitreoscilla expresses a homodimeric haemoglobin (VHb) when subjected to oxygen-limited conditions. READ MORE
