1. State and trait measures in the affective disorders
Abstract : Background: Personality 'traits' refer to stability, consistency and repeated occurrence of actions while psychiatric 'states' concern the varying part of human behaviour. States are often associated with matter and body, and with biological causes, and 'traits' and 'personality' with 'mind', and with psychological and social causes. READ MORE

2. Gene complexes and regulatory domains in metazoan genomes
Abstract : Despite the recent massive increases in genome and transcript sequence data, including wholegenome sequences for humans and many other metazoans, our understanding of the content of these sequences is far from complete. This thesis is about making use of metazoan sequence data to detect functional genetic elements on a genome-wide scale and examine the distribution of those elements on chromosomes. READ MORE

3. A novel technology for studying the disposition of drugs and toxicants in the lung : short inhalation exposures of the isolated and perfused rat lung to respirable dry particle aerosols
Abstract : The disposition of solutes following the deposition of inhaled substances in the lung is a complex process that proceeds along parallel paths; passive diffusion of solutes through the air/blood barrier and local metabolism followed by blood-borne clearance to the circulation. Using the isolated and perfused lung (IPL) the pulmonary disposition of inhaled particles can be studied in great detail without interference from distal organs and systemic exposure. READ MORE

4. Intrinsic brain activity in health and disease
Abstract : The main part of the brain’s energy need is to support housekeeping functions and internal information processing, regardless of external tasks. Cognitive brain imaging, aimed at relating mental phenomena to neurophysiological processes, has conventionally investigated the brain activity induced by external stimuli. READ MORE

5. Interactions between enteroviruses and the host : implications for type 1 diabetes
Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a disease that results after a selective destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells in the pancreas. The lack of β-cells renders T1D patients completely unable to synthesize and secrete insulin, which leads to a life-long need of exogenous insulin for survival. READ MORE
