  1. 1. Disruption of vitamin A metabolism by dioxin

    Author : Pi Högberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : TCDD; dioxin; vitamin A; retinoic acid; cellular retinol-binding protein; bone;

    Abstract : Vitamin A (retinoids) is a nutrient that plays a central role in development and remains essential for cell growth and differentiation throughout life. Dioxins are polychlorinated organic pollutants known to negatively affect the storage and body clearance of retinoids. READ MORE

  2. 2. Red algal starch metabolism : effects of endosymbionts and nutrient status on starch metabolising enzymes

    Author : Pi Nyvall; Mark Ragan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Many different organisms occur as endosymbionts of red algae and while some are highly pathogenic others have little effect on the host. An endosymbiotic fungus, found in our culture of Gracilariopsis sp., was characterised and identified as a Chytridiomycete. It was named Thalassochytrium gracilariopsidis and probably belongs to a new order. READ MORE

  3. 3. Electron-Lattice Dynamics in pi-Conjugated Systems

    Author : Magnus Hultell (Andersson); Sven Stafström; Alexander Onipko; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polaron dynamics; Exciton dynamics; pi-conjugated systems; Su-Schrieffer-Heeger SSH model; Adiabaticity; Charge carrier transport; Organic electronics.; Computational physics; Beräkningsfysik;

    Abstract : In this thesis we explore in particular the dynamics of a special type of quasi-particle in pi-conjugated materials termed polaron, the origin of which is intimately related to the strong interactions between the electronic and the vibrational degrees of freedom within these systems. In order to conduct such studies with the particular focus of each appended paper, we simultaneously solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the lattice equation of motion with a three-dimensional extension of the famous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model Hamiltonian. 4. 4. Human papillomavirus tropism : determinants of viral tissue specificity

    Author : Nitesh Mistry; Magnus Evander; Ola Forslund; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; papillomavirus; receptor; heparan sulfate; pI; lactoferrin; lactoferricin; transcription; long control region; tropism; Virology; Virologi;

    Abstract : Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women worldwide and human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prerequisit for the development of this cancer. HPV belongs to the Papillomaviridae family and infects the basal layer of epithelial cells where it generally progresses into warts or condylomas. READ MORE

  5. 5. Anti-herpes simplex virus activities of sulfomannan oligosaccharide PI-88 and disulfated cyclitols

    Author : Maria Ekblad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : herpes simplex virus; antiviral drugs; viral glycoproteins; heparan sulfate mimetic; PI-88;

    Abstract : Herpes simplex virus (HSV) initiates invasion of human cells by binding to the cell surface heparan sulfate (HS) glycosaminoglycan chains. This step is mediated by the viral envelope glycoproteins gC and/or gB. READ MORE
