  1. 1. Studies of cAMP and Ca2+ signaling in pancreatic islet cells

    Author : Hongyan Shuai; Anders Tengholm; Erik Gylfe; Sebastian Barg; Albert Salehi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pancreatic islet; insulin; glucagon; somatostatin; pancreatic polypeptide; exendin- 9-39 ; GLP-1; GIP; ATP; adenosine; cAMP; Ca2 ; β-cell; α-cell; δ-cell; PP-cell;

    Abstract : The blood glucose-lowering and -elevating hormones insulin and glucagon are released from the pancreatic islet β- and α-cells, respectively. The intracellular messengers Ca2+ and cAMP have central roles in controlling the secretion of both hormones, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. READ MORE

  2. 2. Islet amyloid polypeptide : Perspectives on the storage and plasma concentration of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in rodent models of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and aspects of amyloidogenesis andelimination of IAPP

    Author : Arnold Leckström; Sture Falkmer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The present study was aimed to investigate plasma concentrations and pancreatic storage of IAPP in relation to that of insulin in four different animal models with hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, obesity and/or NIDDM. The NMRI mice fed a high-fat diet for six months, the Psammomys on high-energy (HE) diet and the genetically obese (ob/ob) mice studied for one year all revealed significantly elevated plasma IAPP concentrations, while the IAPP levels were unchanged in the spontaneously diabetic GK rats during a glucose tolerance test. 3. 3. The human pancreatic polypeptide receptor Y4 : Genetic and functional variation

    Author : Kateryna Shebanits; Dan Larhammar; Sadaf Farooqi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NPY4R; Y4; obesity; CNV; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Humans are evolutionarily adapted to an environment where food is scarce, but today many live in a world of food abundance. Paired with low physical activity, this may lead to weight gain and obesity. Efficient anti-obesity treatments require understanding of the mechanisms that control hunger, satiety, energy metabolism and body weight. READ MORE

  4. 4. Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) : Mechanisms of Amyloidogenesis in the Pancreatic Islets and Potential Roles in Diabetes Mellitus

    Author : Zhi Ma; Arne Andersson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Islet amyloid is the most common characteristic feature of the islets in type 2 diabetes, being found in up to 90% of diabetic patients at post-mortem. lt has as its unique component the islet beta-cell peptide islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), which is eo-secreted with insulin. 5. 5. Glucose metabolism in patients with exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma

    Author : Johan Permert; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : endocrine pancreatic function; euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp; exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma; glucose metabolism; glyccogen synthesis; hyperglycemic clamp; immunohistochemistry; insulin resistance; insulin secretion; in situ hybridization; islet amuyloid polypeptide IAPP ; radioimmunoassay; subtotal pancreatectomy; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Carc.inoma of the exocrine pancreas is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the Western world and the survival rate is one of the lowest for cancers of any site. Pancreatic cancer is characterized by pronounced, early cachexia and frequent metabolic complications. READ MORE
