6. Performance characterization and evaluation of parallel PDE solvers
Abstract : Computer simulations that solve partial differential equations (PDEs) are common in many fields of science and engineering. To decrease the execution time of the simulations, the PDEs can be solved on parallel computers. For efficient parallel implementations, the characteristics of both the hardware and the PDE solver must be taken into account. READ MORE

7. Melt convection in welding and crystal growth
Abstract : A parallel finite element code with adaptive meshing was developed and used to study three dimensional, time-dependent fluid flows caused by thermocapillary convection as well as temperature and dopant distribution in fusion welding and floating zone crystal growth. A comprehensive numerical model of the three dimensional time-dependent fluid flows in a weld pool had been developed. READ MORE

8. Efficient Processing and Storage for Massive MIMO Digital Baseband
Abstract : Driven by the increasing demands on data rate from applications, the wireless communication standard has for decades been evolving approximately at a pace of one generation per ten years. Following this trend, the ambitious plan to replace the current cellular mobile network standard (4G) with the next generation standard (5G) is going through the standardization phase and is getting close to its actual deployment. 9. Large-scale simulation-based experiments with stochastic models using machine learning-assisted approaches : Applications in systems biology using Markov jump processes
Abstract : Discrete and stochastic models in systems biology, such as biochemical reaction networks, can be modeled as Markov jump processes. The chemical master equation describes how the probability distribution of a biochemical system's states evolves. Unfortunately, solutions to the chemical master equation only exist for trivial problems. READ MORE

10. Diffuse-Interface Simulations of Capillary Phenomena
Abstract : Fluid flows mainly driven by capillary forces are presented in this thesis. By means of modeling and simulations, interesting dynamics in capillary-driven flows are revealed such as coalescences, breakups, precursor films, flow instabilities, rapid spreading, rigid body motions, and reactive wetting.
