  1. 1. Evolutionary and mechanistic aspects of insect host plant preference

    Author : Alexander Schäpers; Niklas Janz; Steven Heard; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; host plant choice; host range; diet breadth; butterfly; oviposition; specialist; generalist; insect-plant interaction; search behavior; olfaction; decision making; evolution; parasite-host interaction; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Plant feeding insects comprise about 25% of all animal species on earth and play an important role in all ecosystems. Although we understand that their association with plants is a key-factor driving the diversification in this group, we still have large gaps in our knowledge of the underlying processes of this relationship. 2. 2. Bird-parasite interactions : Using Sindbis virus as a model system

    Author : Karin M. Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Carduelis chloris; Sindbis virus; host-parasite interaction; ornament; social dominance; testosterone; sexual selection; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the evolutionary interactions between birds and a parasite, the mosquito-borne Sindbis virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). In conclusion, the results show that the Sindbis virus is widespread among birds, and that the fitness of infected hosts may be reduced by the virus. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies of Giardia-host interactions: role of cysteine-rich surface proteins

    Author : Dimitra Peirasmaki; Staffan Svärd; Steven Singer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Giardia; intestinal parasite; parasite infection; host-parasite interaction; virulence factors; HCMPs; cysteine-rich proteins; secretome; proteome;

    Abstract : Giardia intestinalis is a eukaryotic parasite that colonizes the small intestine of humans and animals causing the diarrheal disease known as giardiasis. This parasite is not invasive and does not internalize into host cells but it rather attaches to the brush border surface of the small intestine disrupting the epithelial barrier. READ MORE

  4. 4. Host-parasite interactions in the dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii

    Author : Sachie Kanatani; Antonio Barragan; Per Uhlén; Isabelle Tardieux; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Apicomplexa; dendritic cells; microglia; cell migration; 14-3-3 proteins; GABAergic signaling; voltage-dependent calcium channel; host-parasite interaction; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that infects virtually all warm-blooded organisms. Systemic dissemination of T. gondii in the organism can cause life-threatening infection that manifests as Toxoplasma encephalitis in immune-compromised patients. READ MORE

    Abstract : Unicellular parasites of the apicomplexan phylum have a considerable effect on global health and agriculture. Two prominent examples of this phylum include malaria causing parasites of the Plasmodium genus and the widely prevalent parasite Toxoplasma gondii. READ MORE
