  1. 16. A High-end Reconfigurable Computation Platform for Particle Physics Experiments

    Author : Ming Liu; Axel Jantsch; Zhonghai Lu; Wolfgang Kuehn; Lennart Lindh; KTH; []
    Keywords : reconfigurable computing; FPGA implementation; HW SW co-design; pattern recognition; particle physics;

    Abstract : Modern nuclear and particle physics experiments run at a very high reaction rate and are able to deliver a data rate of up to hundred GBytes/s.  This data rate is far beyond the storage and on-line analysis capability. Fortunately physicists have only interest in a very small proportion among the huge amounts of data. READ MORE

  2. 17. 3D Magnetic Nulls and Regions of Strong Current in the Earth's Magnetosphere

    Author : Elin Eriksson; Andris Vaivads; Hans Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic Nulls; Particle Acceleration; Current sheets; Magnetic reconnection; Magnetosphere; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : Plasma, a gas of charged particles exhibiting collective behaviour, can be found everywhere in our vast Universe. The characteristics of plasma in very distant parts of the Universe can be similar to characteristics in our solar system and near-Earth space. READ MORE

  3. 18. Microphysical Conditioning of Gamma-Ray Burst Shocks

    Author : Jacob Trier Frederiksen; Claes Fransson; Åke Nordlund; Mikhail V. Medvedev; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magnetic fields; particle acceleration; plasma instabilities; gamma-ray bursts; collisionless shocks; relativistic outflows; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are believed to be connected with either collapse of massive stars or – in some cases – coalescing neutron stars, both of which cause extreme relativistic explosions observable from the entire Universe. GRBs produce rapid flashes of high energy radiation, extending up to 2MeV in photon energies: as much energy per photon as the rest mass of 4 electrons. READ MORE

  4. 19. Particle image velocimetry in practice

    Author : Torbjörn Green; Kristian Angele; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : Experimental fluid mechanics has for a long time been used to visualize flow phenomenon. An early pioneer was Ludwig Prandtl who used aluminum particles in water flumes to describe the flow in a qualitative manner. In line with the rapid development of Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD, the need for new validation tools has increased. READ MORE

  5. 20. Alfvén Waves and Energy Transformation in Space Plasmas

    Author : Yuri Khotyaintsev; Kalevi Mursula; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Alfvén waves; particle acceleration; ionosphere; magnetopause; magnetic reconnection; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Space Physics; rymdfysik;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the role of Alfvén waves in the energy transformation and transport in the magnetosphere. Different aspects of Alfvén wave generation, propagation and dissipation are considered. The study involves analysis of experimental data from the Freja, Polar and Cluster spacecraft, as well as theoretical development. READ MORE
