11. Spatial and Economic Values of Ecosystem Services : The Case of Sweden's Forests
Abstract : The objective of this licentiate thesis is to determine the value of ecosystem services and their relative importance, and to develop methods to weight these benefits against the market value of timber and other uses for forests. These issues are addressed in two papers with a focus on spatial modeling of ecosystem services and the method of benefit transfer. READ MORE

12. Medical Volume Visualization Beyond Single Voxel Values
Abstract : Medical visualization involves many complex decisions for both the user and the imaging algorithms. This thesis aims to improve medical volume visualization through a series of technical contributions to aid such decision processes. Improvements are achieved by using more data, beyond single voxels, in the associated visual analyses. READ MORE

13. Chloride Induced Corrosion of Reinforcement Steel in Concrete - Threshold Values and Ion Distributions at the Concrete-Steel Interface
Abstract : The chloride threshold value (Cth), or critical chloride content, is defined as the chloride concentration at the depth of the reinforcement, which initiates the depassivation of steel in concrete. However, very limited information is available regarding the chloride distributions at the interface with the steel. READ MORE

14. Mycorrhizal guild functions and conservational values in boreal forests
Abstract : The immense diversity and biomass of ericoid-, ectomycorrhizal, and saprotrophic fungal guilds in boreal forest soils make them vital components of conservation and ecosystem processes, and in particular, many ectomycorrhizal fungi are considered species of conservation concern. However, amalgamated information on the functions and relationships of soil fungi to perceived forest conservation values, and how inter and intra-guild interactions affect the accretion and decomposition of soil organic matter is lacking. 15. Survey estimation for highly skewed data
Abstract : Estimation of the population total of a highly skewed survey variable from a small sample is problematic if straightforward methods are used since (i) when there are no extreme values in the sample, too small estimates will be obtained (ii) if extreme values are sampled, the estimates will become grotesquely large. Traditional methods for outlier treatment will usually compensate for outliers in the sample, thereby avoiding (ii), whereas the small negative bias of (i) will persist. READ MORE
