  1. 1. Partitioning of Drugs and Lignin Precursor Models into Artificial Membranes

    Author : Elisabet Boija; Gunnar Johansson; Per Lundahl; Christine Lagerquist Hägglund; Marja-Liisa Riekkola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; Bilayer disk; Capillary electrophoresis; Detergent; Drug; Electrostatic interaction; Hydrophobic interaction; Immobilized liposome chromatography; Lignin; Lignin precursor model; Liposome; Membrane model; Octanol water partitioning; Partitioning; Phospholipid; Phospholipid bilayer; Sterol; Biokemi;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to characterize membrane-solute interactions using artificial membranes in immobilized liposome chromatography or capillary electrophoresis. The partitioning of a solute into a cell membrane is an essential step in diffusion across the membrane. READ MORE

  2. 2. Efficient Partitioning of Dynamic Structured Grid Hierarchies

    Author : Johan Steensland; Michael Thuné; Jarmo Rantakokko; Charles Norton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; scientific computing; partitioning; structured grids; adaptive mesh refinement; dynamic load balancing; Beräkningsvetenskap; Scientific Computing;

    Abstract : This thesis aims at decreasing execution time for large-scale structured adaptive mesh refinement (SAMR) applications executing on general parallel computers. The key contributions are (1) A conceptual dynamically adaptive meta-partitioner able to select and configure an appropriate partitioning technique, based on application and computer state, and (2) A characterization of new and existing domain-based partitioners, enabling a mapping from application and computer state onto appropriate partitioners, and (3) Sketched scalable solutions, expressed in terms of natural regions and expert algorithms, for the problem to efficiently partition large-scale SAMR applications with deep grid hierarchies executing on general parallel computers, and (4) A software partitioning tool Nature+Fable, implementing the greater parts of these sketched scalable solutions and engineered as part of the meta-partitioner. 3. 3. Protein Surfaces Probed by Aqueous Two-phase Partitioning

    Author : Kristina Berggren; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metabolism; partitioning; Aqueous two-phase systems; protein surface; peptide; Biochemistry; amino acid residue; Biokemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned primarily with peptide and protein partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems and the connection between partitioning behavior and protein structure. The surface properties of a protein is often crucial for recognition and interaction with other molecules. READ MORE

  4. 4. Isolation of caveolae using affinity two-phase partitioning

    Author : Parisa Abedinpour; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metabolism; Biokemi; Metabolism; Biochemistry; basolateral; apical; immunoaffinity; wheat germ agglutinin; caveolin; caveolae caveolae enriched fraction; plasma membranes; rat lung; rat liver; Affinity Partitioning; two-phase partitioning;

    Abstract : The intention of this work was to establish alternative purification methods to obtain highly purified caveolae from various tissues. In order to isolate caveolae, sufficiently pure plasma membranes are needed. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Use of Aliquat-336 in a Partitioning and Transmutation Process and a Kinetic Study of the Oxidation of U(IV) to U(VI)

    Author : Anders Landgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; partitioning; quaternary ammonium salts; transmutation; hydrolysis; Aliquat-336; liquid-liquid extraction; kinetics; oxidation; uranium IV ;

    Abstract : Spent nuclear fuel contains several long-lived radionuclides that must be stored in a safe manner for a long time. Transmutation of these radionuclides into short-lived or stable nuclides reduces the necessary storage time by several orders of magnitude. The nuclides most suitable for transmutation are those of the actinides. READ MORE
