  1. 1. Contaminated sediments: Methods to assess release and toxicity of organic chemical mixtures

    Author : Lukas Mustajärvi; Anna Sobek; Jarkko Akkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment; Hydrophobic organic contaminants; Flux; Bioturbation; Passive sampling; Passive dosing; Mixture toxicity; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Bottom sediments around the world store large amounts of legacy hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), forming mixtures of unknown chemical composition. Primary emissions to the environment of many HOCs have been reduced as a consequence of regulation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Chlorinated Paraffins: improved understanding of their bioaccumulation and toxicity in Daphnia magna

    Author : Mafalda Castro; Magnus Breitholtz; Anna Sobek; Elena Gorokhova; Lillemor Asplund; Martin Scheringer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chlorinated paraffins; POPs; bioaccumulation; toxicity; ecotoxicology; aquatic toxicology; daphnia magna; liposomes; passive dosing; hydrophobic; mixtures; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals, mainly used as flame retardants, plasticizers and metal cutting fluids. Their production has reached historically high levels in the last decade, with an annual production exceeding one million tonnes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Methods to measure mass transfer kinetics, partition ratios and atmospheric fluxes of organic chemicals in forest systems

    Author : Damien Johann Bolinius; Annika Jahnke; Matthew MacLeod; Michael McLachlan; Antonio Di Guardo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrophobic organic chemicals; vegetation; modified Bowen ratio; surface-atmosphere fluxes; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Vegetation plays an important role in the partitioning, transport and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the environment. This thesis aimed at addressing two key knowledge gaps in our understanding of how plants exchange HOCs with the atmosphere: (1) To improve our understanding of the uptake of HOCs into, and transfer through, leaves of different plant species which can significantly influence the transport and fate of HOCs in the environment; and (2) To evaluate an experimental approach to measure fluxes of HOCs in the field. 4. 4. Blood-Brain Barrier Transport of Drugs Across Species with the Emphasis on Health, Disease and Modelling

    Author : Karin Tunblad; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Niclas Jonsson; Elizabeth CM de Lange; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Blood-brain barrier; Disease; Microdialysis; Modelling; Transport; Pharmacokinetics; NONMEM; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci;

    Abstract : The transport of drugs across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) has been investigated in different species using morphine and morphine-6-glucuronide (M6G) as model compounds. The influence of probenecid on the BBB transport of morphine and M6G was investigated, and the consequences of meningitis and severe brain injury on the concentrations of morphine in the brain were examined. 5. 5. Involvement of Membrane Transport Proteins in Intestinal Absorption and Hepatic Disposition of Drugs Using Fexofenadine as a Model Drug

    Author : Niclas Petri; Hans Lennernäs; Geoffrey Tucker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biopharmacy; Fexofenadine; OATP; P-glycoprotein; Organic Anion Transporters; ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters; membrane transport proteins; Bioavailability; Biopharmaceutics; Biofarmaci; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to study the in vivo relevance of membrane transporters for intestinal absorption and the hepatic disposition of drugs in humans and preclinical models. Fexofenadine is a substrate for ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein) and members of the organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP/SLCO) family. READ MORE
