  1. 1. Effects pf hypoxia and antiepileptic drugs of electrophysiological properties of CA1 neurons in hippocampus

    Author : Marita Englund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Antiepileptic drug; brain slice; epilepsy; hippocampus; hypoxia; patchclamp; rat;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on three experimental studies (I-III) of CA1 hippocampal neurons in rat brain slices, where the electrophysiological properties are examined with patch clamp technique under hypoxic conditions and during treatment with antiepileptic drugs, respectively. The cells were visualized and identified in the slice by means of infrared differential interference contrast (IR-DIC) video microscopy and the experiments were carried out at room temperature (22-25 ºC). 2. 2. Neutrophil phagocytosis and secretion : The role of calcium and the cytoskeleton

    Author : Lena Serrander; Joel D. Ernst; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Neutrophils assure rapid removal of bacteria by a variety of processes. They crawl out of the vessels, phagocytose the bacteria and kill them by secretion of bactericidal substances and production of oxidative metabolites. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms of type 1 diabetic serum-induced hyperactivation of CaV1 channels in the pancreatic β cell

    Author : Yue Shi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The pancreatic β cell relies on appropriate Ca2+ entry through voltage-gated calcium (CaV) channels to accomplish its unique function insulin secretion and to guarantee its viability. Well-regulated β cell CaV channels are critical to ensure adequate functional β cell mass, thereby maintaining adequate insulin release and glucose homeostasis in the body. READ MORE

  4. 4. Adult human neural stem cells : properties in vitro and as xenografts in the spinal cord

    Author : Ulf Westerlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Action potential; adult; allodynia; auto-transplantation; endoscope; glutamate; hippocampus; human; neural stem cells; p75; patch clamp; progenitor; spinal cord injury; subventricular zone; synapse; transplantation;

    Abstract : Though the presence of stem cells in the adult human brain has been presented earlier, much has yet to be discovered about these cells. However, the mere potential of these cells has had a significant impact of how we today evaluate the regenerative capacity of the central nervous system and, importantly, on the possible means for science to provide insights in neural repair. 5. 5. A gastight microfluidic system combined with optical tweezers and optical spectroscopy for electrophysiological investigations of single biological cells

    Author : Ahmed Alrifaiy; Staffan Schedin; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical Engineering for Healthcare; Medicinsk teknik för hälsovård;

    Abstract : Stroke affects around 20 million people around the world every year. Clinically, stroke is a result of brain damage due to the shortage of oxygen delivered to the nerve cells. To minimize suffering and costs related to the disease, extensive research is performed on different levels. READ MORE
