  1. 1. Intracellular pathways involved in formation and degradation of prions

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neuroscience

    Author : Elin Allard; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2009]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Prions cause invariably fatal neurodegenerative diseases, in which a misfolded host-encoded protein appears to be the main, if not the only, component of the infectious agent. During disease, a normal cellular protein, PrPC, is converted to a disease-related isoform, PrPSc, by a post-translational process that might require auxiliary cellular cofactors. READ MORE

  2. 2. Role of SOCS proteins during mycobacterial infections

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology

    Author : Berit Carow; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2012]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the world’s most successful bacterial killer. During infection, mycobacteria reside inside host cells encapsulated within a granuloma structure in the latent, asymptomatic phase of infection. Only 10% of latently infected develop active, infectious tuberculosis months or years after the initial infection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Tissue responses and host transcriptomics in bacterial infections

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Neuroscience

    Author : Jorrit Boekel; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2011]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bacterial infections can damage host tissue and are as such a potential threat to their hosts. To protect themselves from pathogens, hosts therefore can employ diverse immune reactions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Features of adult neural progenitor cells

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Clinical Neuroscience

    Author : Lisa Arvidsson; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2013]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adult neural progenitor cell;

    Abstract : The adult Central Nervous System (CNS) harbors neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in three areas: the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone in the hippocampus and around the central canal in the spinal cord. The NPCs can be isolated and cultured in vitro. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies on bacterial transmission pathways in a high endemic area, with a focus on Helicobacter pylori

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Clinical Neuroscience

    Author : Anders Janzon; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2009]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; H. pylori; enterotoxigenic E. coli; V. cholerae; real-time PCR; transmission pathways; gastroenteritis; mouse infection models; bacterial gene expression;

    Abstract : Even though half of the world’s population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, which causes gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, the transmission routes of these bacteria remain unknown despite extensive epidemiological studies. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Vibrio cholerae are two of the most common causes of acute watery diarrhea in developing countries. READ MORE
