1. Energy and intensity modulated radiation therapy with electrons
Abstract : In recent years intensity modulated radiation therapy with photons (xIMRT) has gained attention due to its ability to reduce the dose in the tissues close to the tumour volume. However, this technique also results in a large low dose volume. READ MORE

2. Towards Personalized Cancer Therapy : New Diagnostic Biomarkers and Radiosensitization Strategies
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the evaluation of biomarkers for radio-immunodiagnostics and radio-immunotherapy and on radiosensitization strategies after HSP90 inhibition, as a step towards more personalized cancer medicine. There is a need to develop new tracers that target cancer-specific biomarkers to improve diagnostic imaging, as well as to combine treatment strategies to potentiate synergistic effects. READ MORE

3. Radiation Oncology Data and Modelling Side Effects after Radiation Therapy
Abstract : Although modern radiation therapy techniques have the ability to conform the dose distribution of ionizing radiation tightly around the volume to be treated, unwanted irradiation to surrounding organs remains a problem. The probability of a side effect arising in the normal tissue of a patient after radiation therapy can be modelled by sigmoid mathematical functions known as normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models. 4. Radiation-induced dysphagia in head and neck cancer - risk structures and methodological aspects
Abstract : Background/Aims: Swallowing difficulties are common after radiation therapy (RT) in head and neck cancer (HNC). The overall aim of this thesis was to address radiation-induced late dysphagia with regard to investigating anatomical risk structures related to the development of radiation-induced dysphagia, as well as methodological aspects in the evaluation of swallowing. 5. Impact of disease and treatment on body weight and eating in patients with head and neck cancer : experiences from a multicenter study
Abstract : Background Nutritional deterioration in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) has a multifactorial etiology mainly associated with tumor and treatment related factors. The objective of the present thesis was to investigate the impact of the disease and treatment on body weight and eating in patients with HNC treated with radiation therapy (RT) as the single modality treatment or as preoperative RT by analyzing body weight and body mass index (BMI) over time, predictive factors for weight loss and BMI, weight loss and BMI as prognostic factors for survival, and by studying the patients’ own experience of food and eating.
