    Abstract : The first bone marrow transplant in a human was performed in 1959, providing evidence that cells can be used for transplantation and treatment, revealing that healing capacities lie within the human body that ought to be understood. Since then hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has developed as a standard treatment for many cancers besides other malignancies. READ MORE

  2. 12. Identification and characterization of novel genetic and epigenetic factors required for normal and malignant hematopoiesis

    Author : Yaser Heshmati; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of blood cancer, characterized by clonal expansion and loss of differentiation ability of myeloid progenitor cells leading to abnormal accumulation of immature myeloid cells (myeloblasts) in the bone marrow and peripheral blood. This thesis (study I to IV) focused on the identification and characterization of genes which are required for AML growth. READ MORE

  3. 13. Identification and characterization of small molecules targeting MYC function

    Author : Qinzi Yan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The MYC family genes (c-, N- and L-MYC) encode potent oncoproteins/transcription factors regulating fundamental cellular processes involved in cell proliferation, metabolism and survival, and they play an important role in tumor development. Overexpression of MYC often induce apoptosis as a failsafe mechanism to prevent tumor development and it is known to sensitize cells to genotoxic agents that induce DNA damage by triggered apoptosis.
