  1. 1. Exposure to brominated flame retardants in electronics recycling : air and human plasma levels

    Author : Anneli Julander; Magnus Engwall; Bert van Bavel; Myrto Petreas; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; PBDE; BTBPE; DeBDethane; Thyroid hormone; Occupational exposure; Human plasma; Air sampling; MeO-PBDE; PBDE; BTBPE; DeBDetan; Sköldkörtelhormon; Yrkesexponering; Human plasma; Luftprovtagning; MeO-PBDE; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and 1,2-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentabromophenyl)ethane (DeBDethane) were analysed in air and blood samples from workers at an electronics recycling facility. The samples were collected regularly for 18 months and were analysed by isomer specific GC/MS analysis in both electron impact (EI) and negative chemical ionisation (NCI) mode. READ MORE

  2. 2. Neonatal Developmental Neurotoxicity of Brominated Flame Retardants, the Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)

    Author : Henrik Viberg; Per Eriksson; Susan Schantz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; brominated flame retardants; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; PBDE; neonatal; development; neurotoxicity; behaviour; cholinergic system; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines developmental neurotoxic effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), PBDE 99, PBDE 153, and the fully brominated PBDE 209, after exposure during the newborn period in rodents. Our environment contains vast numbers of contaminants, including the flame retardants, PBDEs. READ MORE

  3. 3. Levels of brominated flame retardants in humans and their environment : occupational and home exposure

    Author : Marie Karlsson; Bert van Bavel; Bo Strandberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PBDE; BTBPE; DeBDethane; plasma; air; dust; Northern fulmar; egg; household; occupational exposure; Chemistry; Kemi; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Plasma from workers at an electronic dismantling plant were analysed for tri- to heptaBDEs (brominated diphenyl ethers), during 18 months. The different exposed groups showed concentrations ranging from 0.06to 2.8 ng g-1 (l. READ MORE

  4. 4. Occurrence and fate of emerging and legacy flame retardants : from indoor environments to remote areas

    Author : Seth Newton; Cynthia de Wit; Ulla Sellström; Matthew MacLeod; Roland Kallenborn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Flame retardant; emerging; legacy; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; PBDE; HBCDD; long range transport; dust; air; soil; atmospheric deposition; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that can be found in various matrices in all corners of the planet, including remote areas such as the Arctic.  Several POPs are known and monitored but given the abundance of new chemicals in commerce about which little is known, chemicals that may be new POPs are constantly being screened for. 5. 5. Large Volume Injection and Hyphenated Techniques for Gas Chromatographic Determination of PBDEs and Carbazoles in Air

    Author : Petter Tollbäck; Conny Östman; Tuulia Hyötyläinen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; large volume injection; hyphenated techniques; LC-GC; GC-MS; mass spectrometry; GC; gas chromatography; carbazoles; PBDE; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on studies in which the suitability of various gas chromatography (GC) injection techniques was examined for the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and carbazoles, two groups of compounds that are thermally labile and/or have high boiling-points. For such substances, it is essential to introduce the samples into the GC system in an appropriate way to avoid degradation and other potential problems. READ MORE
