  1. 1. Marine Current Resource Assessment : Measurements and Characterization

    Author : Nicole Carpman; Karin Thomas; Mats Leijon; Sandra Eriksson; Mairead Atcheson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ADCP; Engineering Science with specialization in Science of Electricity; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot elektricitetslära;

    Abstract : The increasing interest in converting energy from renewable resources into electricity has led to an increase in research covering the field of marine current energy, mainly concerning tidal currents and in-stream tidal turbines. Tides have the advantage of being predictable decades ahead. READ MORE

  2. 2. 3D Magnetic Photonic Crystals : Synthesis and Characterization

    Author : Mei Fang; K.Venkat Rao; Lyubov Belova; Rajeev Ahuja; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; magnetic photonic crystals; photonic band gaps; Fe3O4 nanoparticles; silica; Optical physics; Optisk fysik; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis presents the synthesis methods and the characterizations of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, silica spheres with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded, and three dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) prepared from the spheres. The structure, material composition, magnetic and optical properties, photonic band gaps (PBGs), as well as how these properties depend on the concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles, are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Faraday rotation (FR) and optical spectrophotometers. 3. 3. Characterization of PAH-contaminated soils focusing on availability, chemical composition and biological effects

    Author : Magnus Bergknut; Mats Tysklind; Dag Broman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs; availability; bioavailability; chemical analysis; characterization; GC-TOFMS; bioassay; toxicity; biological testing; multivariate methods; PCA; PLS; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The risks associated with a soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generally assessed by measuring individual PAHs in the soil and correlating the obtained amounts to known adverse biological effects of the PAHs. The validity of such a risk estimation is dependent on the presence of additional compounds, the availability of the compounds (including the PAHs), and the methods used to correlate the measured chemical data and biological effects. 4. 4. Development of Methods for Phase System Characterization in Liquid Chromatography

    Author : Jörgen Samuelsson; Torgny Fornstedt; Karin Caldwell; Attila Felinger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Analytical chemistry; Liquid chromatography; Adsorption isotherms; Adsorption energy distribution; Tracer pulse method; Elution by characteristic points; Peak deformation; Validation; Hybrid column material; Alkaline separation; Injection-profiles; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is first and foremost to improve the fundamental knowledge of nonlinear and preparative separation theory by focusing on some of the remaining “white spots” on the theoretical chromatographic map. Secondly, the acquired knowledge is used to develop, validate and execute new methods for phase characterization in liquid chromatography. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development of analytical methods for the determination of the small molecule component of complex biological systems

    Author : Kristian Pirttilä; Mikael Hedeland; Curt Pettersson; Torbjörn Arvidsson; Thomas Moritz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metabolomics; data processing; peak characterization; algorithm; multivariate data analysis; chromatography; sequential columns; HILIC; RPLC; liquid chromatography; mass spectrometry; LC; MS; noise-induced hearing loss; NIHL; guinea pig; perilymph; method development; validation; R; C ; Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Analytisk farmaceutisk kemi;

    Abstract : The research field of untargeted metabolomics aims to determine the relative abundance of all small metabolites in a biological system in order to find biomarkers or make biological inference with regards to the internal or external stimuli. This is no trivial aim, as the small metabolites are both vast in numbers and extremely diverse in their chemical properties. READ MORE
