    Abstract : Children’s early mathematics learning and development have become a topic of increasing interest over the past decade since early mathematical knowledge and skills have been shown to be a strong predictor of later mathematics performance. Understanding how children develop mathematical knowledge and skills and how they can be supported in their early learning could thus prove to be a vital component in promoting learning of more formal mathematics. 2. 2. Pedagogic practice between tradition and renewal : A study of the new mathematics curriculum in Mozambique

    Author : Balbina Mutemba; Candia Morgan; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mathematics Education; Matematik och lärande;

    Abstract : The new school mathematics curriculum in Mozambique, introduced in 2008, is partly competency-based and it advocates a more student-centred pedagogy. The most salient innovative features are the incorporation of mathematical competencies related to the development of students’ reasoning skills, including argumentation, justification and analytical thinking, and the use of heuristic or inductive methods that promote meaningful students’ participation. Abstract : This licentiate thesis is concerned with applying the Japanese problem solving oriented (PSO) teaching approach to Swedish mathematics classrooms. The overall aim of my research project is to describe and investigate the viability of PSO as design tool for teaching mathematics. READ MORE

  4. 4. Traces of Mathematical Facts and Students’ Understanding of the Concept `Quadrilateral´ : An enquiry into young students’ communication

    Author : Eva Juhlin; Maria Johansson; Ewa Bergqvist; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mathematics Education; Matematik och lärande;

    Abstract : Mathematics could be described as a special kind of language, a discourse in which participants communicate abstract concepts. Communication and language are known to be important factors in teaching and learning but little is known about neither communication between students in relation to geometrical concepts, nor what traces of mathematical facts and understanding is incorporated into their communication. 5. 5. Perceptions of mathematics in preschool: "-Now we have a way of talking about the mathematics that we can work with"

    Author : Maria Johansson; Birgit Brandt; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mathematics Education; Matematik och lärande;

    Abstract : The overarching question for this thesis is what is preschool mathematics? This question is examined using different points of views or different perspectives such as the children’s, the preschool teachers and the researchers. The foundation for this thesis is seven articles, two single author articles and five co-authored articles. READ MORE
