1. Electrical Bioimpedance Cerebral Monitoring: Fundamental Steps towards Clinical Application
Abstract : Neurologically related injuries cause a similar number of deaths as cancer, and brain damage is the second commonest cause of death in the world and probably the leading cause of permanent disability. The devastating effects of most cases of brain damage could be avoided if it were detected and medical treatment initiated in time. READ MORE

2. Aspects of the Pre-Diabetic Period in Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease characterized by insulin deficiency, due to immune-mediated destruction of beta cells. Current knowledge regarding the period preceding disease onset comes, to a large extent, from studying risk cohorts based on relatives of T1D-patients, as they have an increased disease risk. 3. Effects of Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Ketogenic Diet on Quality of Life and Changes in EEG and Sleep
Abstract : When anti-epileptic drugs fail, and epilepsy surgery is found unfeasible or ineffective, there remains a group of at least 25% of children with epilepsy in whom seizure control cannot be achieved. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an adjunctive treatment for medically refractory epilepsy. READ MORE

4. Cerebral Injury in Perinatal Asphyxia, epidemiological, clinical, neurophysiological and neuromatabolic investigations
Abstract : Perinatal asphyxia with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the most important cause of perinatal mortality and cerebral palsy (CP) in infants born at term. The aim of the thesis was to investigate epidemiology of perinatal asphyxia, and to investigate early clinical neurological symptoms after perinatal asphyxia in relation to cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRgl) measured by 18-FDG-PET, neurophysiological function, some biochemical markers, also in relation to long-term outcome. 5. Disorders of the cerebral white matter in children
Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to describe the clinical spectrum in a large group of children characterised as having an abnormal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal from cerebral white matter (WM) and to study the radiological, clinical and ophthalmological features in that subgroup where aetiology was unknown. We also wanted to look at biochemical markers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to elucidate pathological processes which were responsible for the WM abnormalities. READ MORE
