  1. 1. Benthic-Pelagic Microbial Interactions and Carbon Cycling in Clearwater Lakes

    Author : Eva Andersson; Anna-Kristina Brunberg; Lars Tanvik; Kristina Sundbäck; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; microphytobenthos; phytoplankton; heterotrophic bacteria; interactions; nutrients; carbon cycling; clearwater lakes; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the interactions among microbiota in clearwater lakes. Field sampling and field experiments were performed to evaluate interactions among microbiota and the importance of benthic versus pelagic microbiota in terms of biomass and production. In addition, carbon cycling in an oligotrophic clearwater lake was calculated. READ MORE

  2. 2. The ecology of the plankton fauna in the Gulf of Bothnia

    Author : Olof Sandström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zooplankton; ecology; the Baltic; selective predation production biology; patchiness;

    Abstract : The geographical distribution of the Gulf of Bothnia zooplankton species is presented together with observations of abundancies and vertical distributions. The historical development of this plankton community in the last 70 years is discussed.Spring and summer development of the plankton fauna was studiedin the Bothnian Bay. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation of carbon dioxide emission from Swedish boreal lakes and the Gulf of Bothnia

    Author : Grete Algesten; Mats Jansson; Pirkko Kortelainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; lakes; boreal; Gulf of bothnia; CO2; NEE; DOC; mineralization; sediment; catchment; net heterotrophy; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : The global carbon cycle is subject to intense research, where sources and sinks for greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide in particular, are estimated for various systems and biomes. Lakes have previously been neglected in carbon balance estimations, but have recently been recognized to be significant net sources of CO2. READ MORE
