  1. 1. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of touch, cold and warmth in health, neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia

    Author : Eva-Liz Harju; Gary B Rollman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Ongoing pain; tactile and thermal dys function; perceived intensity; Master Scaling; perceived quality; Känsel; Smärta; fysiologisk psykologi; Fibromyalgi; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : The general aim of the present thesis is to examine tactile and thermal perceptual (dys)function by quantitative and qualitative tests of patients with neuropathic pain or fibromyalgia, and to compare results with those of healthy persons. A specific aim is to provide individual data for diagnostic purposes, specific to touch, cold, and warmth (profiles). READ MORE

  2. 2. On Perceived Exertion and its Measurement

    Author : Elisabet Borg; Birgitta Berglund; Ana Garriga-Trillo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Perceptual scaling; psychophysics; Category-Ratio scale; perceived exertion; interindividual comparisons; Psychology; Psykologi; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : The general aim of the thesis is to answer questions on general and differential aspects of perceived exertion and on the measurement of its intensity variation. Overall perceived exertion is commonly treated as a unidemensional construct. This thesis also explores its multidimensional character. Four empirical studies are summarized (Study I-IV). READ MORE

  3. 3. Expecting Happy Women, Not Detecting the Angry Ones : Detection and Perceived Intensity of Facial Anger, Happiness, and Emotionality

    Author : Tonya S. Pixton; Åke Hellström; Maria Larsson; James A. Russell; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Signal Detection Perception ; Happiness; Anger; Face Perception; Facial Expressions; Superiority Effects; Gender Differences; Response Bias; Scaling; Euclidean Distance; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Faces provide cues for judgments regarding the emotional state of individuals. Using signal-detection methodology and a standardized stimulus set, the overall aim of the present dissertation was to investigate the detection of emotional facial expressions (i.e., angry and happy faces) with neutral expressions as the nontarget stimuli. 4. 4. The Role of Odor and Sensory Irritation in Human Chemical Sensitivity

    Author : Li Zheng; Birgitta Berglund; Staffan Hygge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Odor and irritation detection; recognition; threshold; choice theory; intensity; chemical sensitivity; threshold; and sensitivity index.; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis is to apply complimentary psychophysical theories and methods to investigate human perception of odor and sensory irritation of chemical compounds present in indoor air. Three psychophysical theories: Signal Detection Theory (SDT), Threshold Theory and Luce’s Choice Theory (CT) were applied to measure detection and recognition of odor and sensory irritation of two odorous irritants (pyridine and formaldehyde) by using the method of constant stimuli.
