  1. 16. Gibbs Measures and Phase Transitions in Potts and Beach Models

    Author : Per Hallberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : Potts model; beach model; percolation; random-cluster model; Gibbs measure; coupling; Markov chains on infinite trees; critical exponent;

    Abstract : The theory of Gibbs measures belongs to the borderlandbetween statistical mechanics and probability theory. In thiscontext, the physical phenomenon of phase transitioncorresponds to the mathematical concept of non-uniqueness for acertain type of probability measures.The most studied model in statistical mechanics is thecelebrated Ising model. 2. 17. On the Structure and Dynamics of Polyelectrolyte Gel Systems and Gel-surfactant Complexes

    Author : Per Johan Råsmark; Christer Elvingson; Johan Bergenholtz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; polyelectrolyte gel; microgel; dynamic light scattering; Raman spectroscopy; periodic boundary conditions; percolation; hypersphere; Monte Carlo; Brownian dynamics; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the results of experimental work on polyelectrolyte gels and their interaction with oppositely charged surfactants, and presents two new algorithms applicable to the simulation of colloid and polymer systems.The model systems investigated were crosslinked poly(acrylate) (PA) and poly(styrene sulphonate) (PSS), and the surfactant was dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DoTAB). 3. 18. Interacting particle systems for opinion dynamics: the Deffuant model and some generalizations

    Author : Timo Hirscher; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Deffuant model; bounded confidence; opinion dynamics; sociophysics; consensus formation; general opinion space; percolation; pumpless water transport.; opinion dynamics;

    Abstract : In the field of sociophysics, concepts and techniques taken from statistical physics are used to model and investigate some social and political behavior of a large group of humans: their social network is given by a simple graph and neighboring individuals meet and interact in pairs or small groups. Although most of the established models feature rather simple microscopic interaction rules, the macroscopic long-time behavior of the collective often eludes an analytical treatment due to the complexity, which stems from the interaction of the large system as a whole.
