  1. 6. Understanding Multicore Performance : Efficient Memory System Modeling and Simulation

    Author : Andreas Sandberg; Erik Hagersten; David Black-Schaffer; David A. Wood; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Computer Architecture; Simulation; Modeling; Sampling; Caches; Memory Systems; gem5; Parallel Simulation; Virtualization; Sampling; Multicore; Datavetenskap; Computer Science;

    Abstract : To increase performance, modern processors employ complex techniques such as out-of-order pipelines and deep cache hierarchies. While the increasing complexity has paid off in performance, it has become harder to accurately predict the effects of hardware/software optimizations in such systems. READ MORE

  2. 7. Fundamental Estimation and Detection Limits in Linear Non-Gaussian Systems

    Author : Gustaf Hendeby; Fredrik Gustafsson; Niclas Bergman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Estimation; Detection; Linear systems; Non-Gaussian; Limits; GLR; CRLB; Automatic control; Reglerteknik;

    Abstract : Many methods used for estimation and detection consider only the mean and variance of the involved noise instead of the full noise descriptions. One reason for this is that the mathematics is often considerably simplified this way. READ MORE

  3. 8. Towards the Limits of Nonlinearity Compensation for Fiber-Optic Channels

    Author : Naga Vishnukanth Irukulapati; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Viterbi algorithm; fiber-optic channel; stochastic digital backpropagation; performance limits; factor graphs; near-MAP detector; Digital backpropagation; nonlinear compensation; mutual information;

    Abstract : The performance of long-haul coherent optical systems is fundamentally limited by fiber nonlinearity and its interplay with chromatic dispersion and noise. Due to nonlinearity, the signal propagating through the fiber interacts with itself and with the noise generated from the inline amplifiers. READ MORE

  4. 9. Mechanics and acoustics of violin bowing : Freedom, constraints and control in performance

    Author : Erwin Schoonderwaldt; Anders Askenfelt; Knut Guettler; Jim Woodhouse; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; bow-string interaction; bowed string; violin playing; motion capture; bowing parameters; performance control; Other physics; Övrig fysik; Music; Musikvetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses sound production in bowed-string instruments from two perspectives: the physics of the bowed string, and bow control in performance. Violin performance is characterized by an intimate connection between the player and the instrument, allowing for a continuous control of the sound via the main bowing parameters (bow velocity, bow force and bow-bridge distance), but imposing constraints as well. 5. 10. Evaluation of Variable Speed Limits : Empirical Evidence and Simulation Analysis of Stockholm’s Motorway Control System

    Author : Albania Nissan; Haris N. Koutsopoulos; Tomer Toledo; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Motorway Control System; Mainline Control; Variable Speed Limits; Driver Behavior; Capacity; Intelligent Transport Systems; microsimulation model; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Mechanical energy engineering; Mekanisk energiteknik; Mechanical energy engineering; Mekanisk energiteknik;

    Abstract : Variable Speed Limits (VSL) are often used to improve traffic conditions on congested motorways. VSL can be implemented as mandatory or advisory. The objective of the thesis isto study in detail the effectiveness of VSL. The focus is on both, design parameters and conditions under which VSL are most effective. READ MORE
