  1. 1. Periodontitis in adolescents : presence of Aggregatibacter species and interactions with the host

    Author : Mark Lindholm; Jan Oscarsson; Anders Johansson; Carola Höglund-Åberg; Eija Könönen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Aggregatibacter aphrophilus; periodontitis; adolescents; OmpA; outer membrane vesicles; serum resistance; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Aggregatibacter aphrophilus are closely related gram-negative bacteria mainly found in the oral cavity. Periodontitis in adolescents is associated with the presence of A. actinomycetemcomitans, but not with the presence of A. aphrophilus. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modulaton of gene expression in human aortic smooth muscle cells by Porphyromonas gingivalis : a possible association between periodontitis and atherosclerosis

    Author : Boxi Zhang; Torbjörn Bengtsson; Allan Sirsjö; Hazem Khalaf; Julia Davies; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microarray; Angiopoietin; Smooth muscle cells; TNF; Periodontitis; Atherosclerosis; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Cancer; Inflammasome; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative, rod-shaped, and anaerobic bacterium that is involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. P. gingivalis produces a variety of virulence factors including gingipains and fimbriae. READ MORE

  3. 3. Periodontitis and coronary artery disease : Studies on the association between periodontitis and coronary artery disease

    Author : Carin Starkhammar Johansson; Arina Richter; Nils Ravald; Björn Klinge; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Periodontitis and coronary artery disease (CAD) are highly prevalent in Sweden’s population; both diseases have complicated pathogeneses and clinical manifestations due to immune-system triggered inflammation. Research in recent years reported that inflammation is a significant active participant in many chronic diseases. READ MORE

  4. 4. Functional characteristics of periodontitis and peri-implantitis lesions in humans

    Author : Carlotta Dionigi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; periodontitis; peri-implantitis; biopsy; immunohistochemistry; oxidative stress; epigenetics; titanium micro-particles; proton-induced X-rays emission; RNA-sequencing; spatial transcriptomics;

    Abstract : In the current series of studies functional characteristics of periodontitis and peri-implantitis lesions in humans were investigated. Cell markers for antimicrobial activity were used to evaluate differences between periodontitis and peri-implantitis lesions (Study I), while epigenetic and oxidative stress markers were used to compare periodontitis lesions in smokers and non-smokers (Study II). 5. 5. Calcified carotid artery atheromas in panoramic radiographs : diagnostic reliability and association to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and periodontitis

    Author : Nils Gustafsson; Eva Levring Jäghagen; Jan Ahlqvist; Ulf Näslund; Per Wester; Annika Ekestubbe; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Panoramic radiographs; cardiovascular disease; carotid artery atheromas; diabetes mellitus; oral health; periodontitis; diagnostic accuracy; myocardial infraction; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Objective: Incidental findings of Calcified Carotid Artery Atheromas (CCAA) on Panoramic Radiographs (PRs) of the jaws can be a risk marker for cardiovascular disease. The objectives for the thesis were to investigate the association between CCAA and 1) Myocardial Infarction (MI), 2) periodontitis, 3) diabetes and 4) estimated cardiovascular risk. READ MORE
