  1. 11. Ultrasound-guided in utero lentivirus transduction of the murine nervous system to investigate nervous system disorders

    Author : Katrin Mangold; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neurodevelopment is a highly dynamic process involving hundreds of molecular different cell types. Gain and loss of function studies provide valuable insight into the gene regulatory networks that orchestrate this morphological process. READ MORE

  2. 12. Scarring and regeneration in the central nervous system

    Author : Jannis Kalkitsas; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In response to injury, tissues employ conserved reparative mechanisms to heal the damage and recover their function. The reparative success varies according to the organism, the tissue or organ, and the age of the specimen. The reparative response occurs through two separate but overlapping processes: wound healing and regeneration. READ MORE

  3. 13. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification

    Author : Niccoló Peruzzi; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; x-ray imaging; neutron imaging; μCT; synchrotron radiation; x-ray phase-contrast; nanoholotomography; x-ray elemental mapping; biomedical applications; virtual histology; biodegradable implants; Mg-alloys; enteric nervous system; peripheral neuropathy; gastroenteric dysmotility; Fysicumarkivet A:2021:Peruzzi;

    Abstract : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them.The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 4. 14. Erasing Fear : Effect of Disrupting Fear Memory Reconsolidation on Central and Peripheral Nervous System Activity

    Author : Thomas Ågren; Mats Fredrikson; Tomas Furmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Memory reconsolidation; fear conditioning; serotonin; dopamine; polymorphism; gene; exposure therapy; fMRI; amygdala;

    Abstract : Fear memories, here defined as learned associations between a stimulus and a physiological fear reaction, are formed through fear conditioning. In animals, fear memories, present in the lateral amygdala, undergo reconsolidation after recall. READ MORE

  5. 15. Neurons and glia in the peripheral nervous system : interactions in health and disease

    Author : Filipa Bouçanova; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is composed of nerves and ganglia that connect the brain and the spinal cord (the central nervous system, CNS) to the outside world. The nerves contain the extensions (axons) of both sensory and motor neurons, which allow us to detect and respond to different stimuli. READ MORE
