  1. 1. Genetic variation and local adaptation in peripheral populations of toads

    Author : Björn Rogell; Jacob Höglund; Anssi Laurila; Josh Van Bushkirk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : Northern fringe populations generally have low amounts of genetic variation and inhabit habitats where specific adaptations are needed. On the Swedish west coast, the natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) inhabits skerry islands. READ MORE

  2. 2. Population Dynamics and Conservation of the Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis) on the Edge of its Range

    Author : Sven-Åke Berglind; Pekka Pamilo; Per Sjögren-Gulve; Coulson Tim; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; demography; extinction; habitat; Lacerta agilis; management; metapopulation; peripheral populations; population dynamics; population viability analysis; reintroduction; reptiles; umbrella species; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) reaches the northern periphery of its distribution in south-central Sweden, where small, isolated relict populations occur in pine heath forests on sandy sediments. Modern forestry and fire suppression have reduced the amount of suitable open habitat for the species in this area and seem to be important for its decline. READ MORE

  3. 3. Peripheral Regulation of Pain and Itch

    Author : Elín Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir; Malin C. Lagerström; George H. Caughey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pain; itch; CGRP; TRPV1; mast cell; mast cell protease; mMCP4; mMCP6; CPA3; endothelin-1; compound 48 80; MRGPRX2; single-stranded oligonucleotide;

    Abstract : Pain and itch are diverse sensory modalities, transmitted by the somatosensory nervous system. Stimuli such as heat, cold, mechanical pain and itch can be transmitted by different neuronal populations, which show considerable overlap with regards to sensory activation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Factors regulating lymphocyte development and peripheral activation

    Author : Anna Makowska; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; serology; Immunology; NKT cells; TFG beta; Treg; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : Peripheral tolerance is regulated by different types of regulatory T cells, including CD1-restricted T cells and CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells. This thesis has focused on the interactions between T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs) and the immunregulatory function of TGF-b as two important factors regulating differentiation and activation of T cells in the periphery. 5. 5. Characterization of HIV-1 populations in infected cells

    Author : Lina Josefsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is one of the most fatal diseases in the world today, and the most important worldwide infectious disease in terms of mortality. This virus infects and kills cells of the immune system involved in defending the body against infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. READ MORE
