  1. 1. Pharmacological Modulation of Skeletal Homeostasis

    Author : Niklas U. Andersson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Farmakologi; toxicology; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi; pharmacy; pharmacognosy; Pharmacological sciences; peripheral quantitative computed tomography.; dual energy X-ray absorptiomenty; estrogen; parathyroid hormone; gastrectomy; alendronate; ovariectomy; Bone;

    Abstract : Both ovariectomy (OVX) and gastrectomy (GX) cause osteopenia in several animal species including humans. While the effect of OVX has been ascribed to estrogen deficiency, the underlying mechanism behind GX-induced osteopenia is poorly understood. READ MORE

  2. 2. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification

    Author : Niccoló Peruzzi; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; x-ray imaging; neutron imaging; μCT; synchrotron radiation; x-ray phase-contrast; nanoholotomography; x-ray elemental mapping; biomedical applications; virtual histology; biodegradable implants; Mg-alloys; enteric nervous system; peripheral neuropathy; gastroenteric dysmotility; Fysicumarkivet A:2021:Peruzzi;

    Abstract : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them.The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 3. 3. Chronic intraoral pain - assessment of diagnostic methods and prognosis

    Author : Maria Pigg; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neuropathic pain; Orofacial pain; Trigeminal pain; Clinical studies; Prognosis; Diagnostic methods; Quantitative sensory testing; QST; Chronic pain; Endodontics;

    Abstract : The overall goal of this thesis was to broaden our knowledge of chronic intraoral pain. The research questions were:•What methods can be used to differentiate inflammatory, odontogenic tooth pain from pain that presents as toothache but is non-odontogenic in origin?•What is the prognosis of chronic tooth pain of non-odontogenic origin, and which factors affect the prognosis?Atypical odontalgia (AO) is a relatively rare but severe and chronic pain condition affecting the dentoalveolar region. 4. 4. Diabetic osteopathy : a study in the rat

    Author : Tashfeen Ahmad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Diabetes mellitus type 2; Goto-Kakizaki rat; bone mineral density; insulin-like growth factor-I; insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1; insulin-like growth factor binding protein 4; peripheral neuropathy; substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; neuropeptide Y; Diabetes mellitus type 2;

    Abstract : The present study on non-obese Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats with type-2 diabetes and neuropathy was an attempt to describe and define pertinent features of diabetic osteopathy. Altogether, the study included 33 GK rats aged 12 and 20 months, and 36 age-matched Wistar rats as controls. READ MORE

  5. 5. Image Analysis for Trabecular Bone Properties on Cone-Beam CT Data

    Author : Eva Klintström; Örjan Smedby; Rodrigo Moren; Torkel Brismar; Dan Mellström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Trabecular bone structure as well as bone mineral density (BMD) have impact on the biomechanical competence of bone. In osteoporosis-related fractures, there have been shown to exist disconnections in the trabecular network as well as low bone mineral density. Imaging of bone parameters is therefore of importance in detecting osteoporosis. READ MORE
