  1. 1. Permeability of non-crimp fabrics : a computational fluid dynamics approach

    Author : Markus Nordlund; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : In the present market for manufacturing of high performance structural parts for various applications such as aerospace, transportation, infrastructure, marine, sports and recreation, low weight, high performance composites are preferable. Non-Crimp Fabrics (NCFs) are often used for such applications due to its high mechanical properties and often cost effective production. READ MORE

  2. 2. Influence of liquid diffusion on the performance of polymer materials in industrial applications

    Author : Stefanie Römhild; Mikael Hedenqvist; Lars Berglund; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LCP; Vectra A950; thermoset resin; FRP; diffusion; disclination; annealing; lining; bonding; long-term properties in water; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : Diffusion of liquids into and through polymers is an important factor that negatively may influence the durability or lifetime of a polymer structure used in industrial applications. In this work two types of polymers, a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP, Vectra A950) and various thermoset resins as used in fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) process equipment were studied with regard to barrier properties, chemical resistance and long-term performance. 3. 3. Permeability modelling and particle deposition mechanisms related to advanced composites manufacturing

    Author : Markus Nordlund; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : Advanced composite materials reinforced by Non-Crimp Fabrics (NCFs) are becoming increasingly popular for high performance, light weight, complex structures, due to their high mechanical properties and relatively cheap production costs. These materials, not only improve the structural properties, but also induce great possibilities for reduced fuel consumptions for aircrafts and automotives, due to their high strength to weight ratio. 4. 4. Analysis of heat transfer and fluid flow in the resin transfer moulding process

    Author : Rikard Gebart; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : This thesis contains an analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer problems in the resin transfer moulding (RTM) process for manufacturing of polymer based fibre composites and it consists of five separate papers. The permeability of unidirectional fabrics, that are often used in advanced composites, is considered in Paper A and a theory for the permeability dependence on the micro geometry is developed. 5. 5. Void formation and transport in manufacturing of polymer composites

    Author : Staffan Lundström; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : In this thesis void formation and removal during the Resin Transfer Moulding process are considered. The problem is examined by doing real moulding as well as mouldings under microscope, model experiment and analytical computations. The materials utilised are in most cases glass fibre reinforcements and vinylester resins. READ MORE
