  1. 6. The k-assignment polytope, phylogenetic trees, and permutation patterns

    Author : Jonna Gill; Jan Snellman; Axel Hultman; Bruce Sagan; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In this thesis three combinatorial problems are studied in four papers.In Paper 1 we study the structure of the k-assignment polytope, whose vertices are the mxn (0,1)-matrices with exactly k 1:s and at most one 1 in each row and each column. READ MORE

  2. 7. Enumerative combinatorics related to partition shapes

    Author : Jonas Sjöstrand; Anders Björner; Christian Krattenthaler; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; partition shape; sign-imbalance; Robinson-Schensted correspondence; chess tableau; restricted word; cylindrical lattice walk; Poincaré polynomial; Bruhat interval; rook polynomial; pattern avoidance; partitionsform; teckenobalans; Robinson-Schensted-korrespondens; schacktablå; begränsade ord; cylindriska latticestigar; poincarépolynom; bruhatintervall; tornpolynom; mönsterundvikande permutation; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with enumerative combinatorics applied to three different objects related to partition shapes, namely tableaux, restricted words, and Bruhat intervals. The main scientific contributions are the following. READ MORE

  3. 8. Source-channel coding for wireless networks

    Author : Niklas Wernersson; Mikael Skoglund; Norbert Goertz; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Source coding; channel coding; joint source-channel coding; multiple description coding; soft decoding; permutation codes; Telecommunication; Telekommunikation;

    Abstract : The aim of source coding is to represent information as accurately as possible using as few bits as possible and in order to do so redundancy from the source needs to be removed. The aim of channel coding is in some sense the contrary, namely to introduce redundancy that can be exploited to protect the information when being transmitted over a nonideal channel. READ MORE

  4. 9. Nonparametric tests for comparing two treatments by using ordinal data

    Author : Helen Wahlström; Elisabeth Svensson; Jan Lanke; Sture Holm; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistik; change; clinical trial; Monte Carlo; ordered categorical data; paired data; permutation test; Pitman efficiency; power; stratification; ties; visual analogue scale; Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney statistic; statistik; Statistics; Statistik; Statistics; Statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns four nonparametric tests for comparing two treatments in a randomized controlled clinical trial when the main response variable generates discrete or continuous ordinal data and measurements are made at baseline and follow-up. In the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test (WMW) the baseline values are not taken into account at all, but in the other three tests both baseline and follow-up values are used. READ MORE

  5. 10. Methods for interval-censored data and testing for stochastic dominance

    Author : Angel G. Angelov; Magnus Ekström; Maria Karlsson; Bengt Kriström; Per Johansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Interval-censored data; Informative censoring; Self-selected intervals; Questionnaire-based studies; Maximum likelihood; Permutation test; Two-sample test; Stochastic dominance; Four-decision test; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis includes four papers: the first three of them are concerned with methods for interval-censored data, while the forth paper is devoted to testing for stochastic dominance.In many studies, the variable of interest is observed to lie within an interval instead of being observed exactly, i.e. READ MORE
