11. Proton Conducting Ceramics; Synthesis, Characterization and Sample Cell Environments
Abstract : Acceptor doped Perovskite ceramics have been shown to exhibit high levels of protonic conduction in humid atmospheres. However significant grain boundary resistance and long sintering times required to achieve sufficient grain size growth has hindered their widespread application as electrolyzers, fuel cells and gas separation membranes. 12. Super-resolution Luminescence Micro-Spectroscopy : A nano-scale view of solar cell material photophysics
Abstract : Optical microscopy is a fundamental tool in a range of disciplines encompassed by the physical and biological sciences. At the dawn of this millennium, a break-through was made in optical microscopy where super-resolution methods emerged and declared imaging beyond the optical diffraction limit a possibility. 13. Neutron scattering for sustainable energy materials: investigations of proton dynamics in acceptor doped barium zirconates
Abstract : Proton conducting oxides are currently receiving considerable attention for their present or potential use as electrolytes in technological devices such as sensors and electrolysers and, in particular, solid oxide fuel cells, which are among the most promising apparatuses for energy conversion. One of the main challenges for these latter devices is to combine the advantages of a solid electrolyte with those of operational temperatures below 750 °C, which is currently hampered by insufficient conductivities in the targeted temperature range. 14. New Materials in Environmental Catalysis
Abstract : This thesis presents new approaches to the control of emissions within the field of environmental catalysis. Three catalytic systems; bimetallic catalysts, perovskites and promoted catalysts have been prepared and evaluated for complete oxidation of volatile organic compounds and for simultaneous conversion of CO, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides.
