  1. 6. Legacy persistent organic pollutants and chemicals of emerging concern in Sweden : from indoor environments to remote areas

    Author : Seth Newton; Cynthia de Wit; Ulla Sellström; Per Larsson; Annika Jahnke; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; persistent organic pollutants; atmospheric deposition; arctic; flame retardant; POP; long range transport; miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry;

    Abstract : Bulk atmospheric deposition samples were taken every two months for a year in 2009-2010 at two sites in northern Sweden and analyzed for a suite of legacy and emerging persistent organic chemicals including legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)  and novel flame retardants (NFRs).  To further investigate the urban occurrence and contribution to remote contamination of flame retardants, indoor air, ventilation system air, and dust were sampled in several microenvironments in Stockholm during the winter of 2012 for analysis of PBDEs, isomer-specific hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and NFRs. 2. 7. Dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in thermochemical conversion of biomass : formation, distribution and fingerprints

    Author : Qiuju Gao; Stina Jansson; Bogdan Dlugogorski; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins; polychlorinated dibenzofurans; polychlorinated naphthalenes; PCDD; PCDF; PCN; persistent organic pollutants; torrefaction; pyrolysis;

    Abstract : In the transition to a sustainable energy supply there is an increasing need to use biomass for replacement of fossil fuel. A key challenge is to utilize biomass conversion technologies in an environmentally sound manner. READ MORE

  3. 8. Models of the Distribution of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Marine Environment

    Author : N. Johan Persson; Dag Broman; Kevin Jones; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; persistent organic pollutants; mass balance models; fugacity models; eutrophication; PCDD F; PCB; PCN; soot carbon.; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is a group of chemicals that are toxic, undergo long-range transport and accumulate in biota. Due to their persistency the distribution and recirculation in the environment often continues for a long period of time. READ MORE

  4. 9. Simplifying complex models : Application of modeling tools in exposure assessment of organic pollutants

    Author : Emma Undeman; Michael McLachlan; Kathrin Fenner; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mass balance model; environmental modeling; exposure modeling; bioaccumulation; organic contaminants; emission estimate; plant model; steady state; poly parameter linear free energy relationship; PPLFER; ecosystem susceptibility; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Thousands of chemicals are used in society, but the exposure to humans and other organisms has been measured only for a small number of compounds. Modeling tools constitute low-cost and effective alternatives to measurements for the assessment of exposure. READ MORE

  5. 10. Legacy and emerging pollutants in pristine and polluted boreal catchments

    Author : Anh Minh Nguyen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are bioaccumulative chemicals that are ubiquitously and globally distributed in the environment. Several species of POPs have been studied extensively and are continuously being monitored in various environmental matrices for decades. READ MORE
