1. Perturbation-based Control of Industrial Fed-batch Bioprocesses
Abstract : The topic of this thesis is bioprocess control, more specifically control of industrial-scale microbial fed-batch bioprocesses. Its focus is therefore on methods which are easy to implement in an industrial setting, which gives certain limitations on sensors, actuators and control systems. READ MORE

2. Extremum Seeking Control : Stability, Accuracy, and Applications
Abstract : In many applications, there is a variable that indicates the overall performance and that must be maximized, such as the output of a hydro power turbine or a mineral processing plant, or that must be minimized, such as CO2 emissions or the consumption of resources. Extremization of this variable (maximization or minimization) through adjusting the influencing manipulated variables is occasionally required without prior knowledge of the optimal values of the manipulated variables or of the optimized variable. 3. Extremum-Seeking Control of Industrial-Scale Fermentation Processes
Abstract : The work presented here is based on two papers, both pertaining to perturbation-based control strategies in industrial fed-batch fermentation processes. The first paper describes a new control strategy for avoiding overflow metabolism in the exponential growth phase of a fermentation, based on analysis of the frequency spectrum of the dissolved oxygen measurement following a periodic perturbation in the feed rate.
