  1. 11. Genomics and metabolomics in the North Atlantic deep-sea sponge Geodia barretti

    Author : Karin Steffen; Paco Cárdenas; Ulf Göransson; Anders Backlund; Susanna López-Legentil; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; demosponge; whole genome sequencing; population genetics; peptide synthesis; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : Sponges are among the earliest diverging taxa in the animal tree of life. They are sessile, filter-feeding animals found in marine and freshwater habitats. Many species are characterized by a close, specific and consistent association with microbes, mainly Bacteria and Archaea. READ MORE

  2. 12. Cyclic peptides as biological tools : Applications for diagnosis and therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19

    Author : Camilla Eriksson; Ulf Göransson; Sunithi Gunasekera; Christian Becker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scaffold peptides; peptide grafting; rheumatoid arthritis; SARS-CoV-2; autoantibodies; peptide synthesis; pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to design, synthesize and evaluate cyclic peptide scaffolds grafted with biological epitopes for their ability to bind antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 sera. One of the main outcomes of this thesis was the observation that scaffold peptides grafted with target epitopes efficiently neutralized anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPA) from rheumatoid arthritis patients.     Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peptide toxin; cystine knot; nemertide; cyclotide; nemertea.; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to discover, synthesize and characterize disulphide-stabilized peptides from marine worms (Nemertea sp.) and plants (Viola sp.). READ MORE

  4. 14. Regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase - Consequences in experimental models of bladder disease

    Author : Rebecka Johansson; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; smooth muscle-myosin heavy chain; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; farmakognosi; farmaci; actin; BDNF; Rho; aminoguanidine; TNF-alpha; IL-1beta; hypertrophy; differentiation; smooth muscle; bladder; nitric oxide; inducible nitric oxide synthase; toxikologi;

    Abstract : Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is associated with various pathophysiological conditions in the lower urinary tract. The aims of this thesis have been to investigate the regulation of iNOS in bladder smooth muscle cells and the consequences on neuromuscular regulation, cell growth and differentiation. READ MORE

  5. 15. Pharmacological Modulation of Skeletal Homeostasis

    Author : Niklas U. Andersson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Farmakologi; toxicology; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi; pharmacy; pharmacognosy; Pharmacological sciences; peripheral quantitative computed tomography.; dual energy X-ray absorptiomenty; estrogen; parathyroid hormone; gastrectomy; alendronate; ovariectomy; Bone;

    Abstract : Both ovariectomy (OVX) and gastrectomy (GX) cause osteopenia in several animal species including humans. While the effect of OVX has been ascribed to estrogen deficiency, the underlying mechanism behind GX-induced osteopenia is poorly understood. READ MORE
